Combining the Mini-Starship created by Robert Zubrin and Miguel Gurrea with an article written by M Salotti, I came up with a two astronaut scout mission with lots of safety features and minimal expense and infrastructure for NASA and SpaceX. it's an interesting idea and seems practical for a lot of reasons but on the explorations side neither team would likely find much different than the other simply because they would have to land within the range of the rovers for crew safety. also lets say only one ship lands safely while the other ship does not. that means the other team would have to go rescue them and then doubling the weight on the rover would limit it's range further.
just food for thought.
It is interesting. I;ve listened to it twice and am still missing a clear answer to this: does the ship that lands on the Mars have sufficient fuel to get the astronauts back to Mars orbit where the waiting Earth return vehicle is waiting? Or is this plan ultimately dependent on manufacturing propellant on Mars to get back to Martian orbit? If so, I think it would it be less risky (i.e. easier to be approved) if propellant production equipment arrived first and could be shown to work? As presented, it seems a significant goal is to avoid refueling Starships in Earth orbit. However, since that's a requirement for Lunar Starship, it should be solved either 2023, or 2024.
One question, why? AI robots and androids make much better scouts and no need for life support or to return them to earth.
Mars sounds like it would be a lot of fun science, but what we need is the moon. We need a human inhabited base that's on the near side, and a radio telescope array on the far side. We need to do paleontology and maybe archaeology science on Mars, but we need to look for living planetary civilizations in a way in which we can hear them.
We are looking for signals that are intended to be discovered, for the most part. I looked at the radio allocation chart recently, and radio astronomy occupies a very small portion of the whole chart. Putting a radio antenna on the far side of the moon would shield it from the radio interference and restrictions found terrestrially. We could put antennas for wavelengths as long as 200 meters on down to the mm range. What won't we hear? Oh, yeah, to get it funded…

Micro Starship for a crew mover to the ISS and as a lifeboat might be a good idea…..
The biggest downside of 'going small' is that it sets us up for another Apollo style "go a couple times and that's it" program, versus sending enough equipment and people to start building out a base that can form the seed of a colony.
The big advantage – fewer Earth launches – won't be much of an advantage if Starship works as planned.
And if I understood the plan correctly, it relies on Starship working as planned anyhow, to get mini to Mars.
Too big a risk to produce insitu propellant. Much safer to carry all the fuel for these early Mars missions. Which might be hydrogen for highest possible efficiency, and thus less fuel. But basically this is a better idea than going straight up with Full Starship missions with perhaps 20 or so crew.
Perhaps Elon and NASA need to get together to do a mission like this, sometime in the early 2030's. I also like the idea of inflatable modules for a decent amount of room during the cruise phase.
I wouldn't start this mission until the propellant for the return had been produced on Mars before the humans take off from Earth. Even then, landing right next to the refuelling depot would be a challenge.
While it would be a great achievement it would be to send people to Mars whether it will ever be done given all the problems and crises on Earth that people never seem to find solutions, or realistic solutions for them, has to be asked. The cost of even the cheapest crewed Mars Mission would be huge indeed – the ISS only orbits of a height of around 240 to 250 miles above Earth and houses at most times only 6 or 7 astronauts, though sometimes 10 or 11, but it still cost over 100 billion dollars to build and billions more to operate. That is still tiny compared to a crewed Mars flight. Whether even Elon Musk and SpaceX can afford the cost of a crewed Mars Mission is questionable, to say the least given the financial and other crises facing the world now. Mr. Musk wants to put a million people on Mars by 2050 – much more likely, though, is will not have sent even one. Humans may send more robots to Mars and if the objective is pure science then it should be left to Rovers to explore Mars.
None of the stuff you proposed is on the path to long term major traffic to Mars. It takes a lot of engineering time to develop all the systems you are talking about. This takes time away from the long term goals of establishing a permanent colony. In, effect you get there quicker (maybe) but can't actually do anything towards establishing a colony. However, putting all your engineering efforts into building the long term full size starship will ultimately get a colony established much sooner by not wasting time on temporary small scale solutions.
On a planet like Mars with such a low atmospheric pressure, landing one of the moons and then lowering on a tether to almost the surface would save a lot of propellant. An electromagnetic launch system would also save propellant.
If you really want to do rocket landing and liftoff, the methane fuel is only one fifth of the propellant mass, so leaving Earth with all the fuel for the round trip would not increase the total weight that much. Then only oxygen refueling would be needed for the return trip.
Well, Listen Jordan. It's a nice idea. Had you had some corroboration from Dr. Zubrin, Scott Manly, or even Kerbel Space program, I might be able to give this child's concept some respect. It seems to me the possibility of burning up in Mars atmosphere, getting stuck on Mars, or getting space crazy, to name a few, are of high probability. A lot of your videos seem to be bent on Starships refueling as an impossibility. Granted, a monumental endeavor but essential for future extensive space operations. This is something that not only Space X will have to develop for their program but will be essential for a space faring species. I haven't seen such a concept since NASA hired Disney animators back in the 70's on a Mars concept. I think you don't see this type of Apollo style project because it is not feasible. None of the Space agencies seem to be onboard with this type of concept. Sometimes, it is best to leave things up to the professionals. I'm not meaning to sound rude but sending 4 men, in 2 tin cans on a 3 year mission, is just not what the space community seems to be envisioning.
Thats a lot of stuff to develop and test, I'd think that it would be way more capital, time, and architecturally efficient to assemble a Mars/Earth transfer reusable nuclear tug in orbit, to dock regular starship "shuttles" to.
How about they get Starship into Earth orbit first, then we can sit around and fantasize.

Do you miss some sort of long duration between favorable launch windows by splitting crews into smaller ships sent in staggered times? If not then two people arrive and start building infrastructure. Next two arrive with more gear and more infrastructure to build out. Then a game of rock/paper/scissors to see which two return while two remain as house-sitters as a third ship with a much larger crew is sent from Earth, passing the returning crew. Transport a 'Boring Machine' with the third ship crew to use to construct more permanent underground habitations.
Why not just have a fuel Depot in orbit in this way we can omit multiple launches at one time . depending on its destinations simply has to Rendezvous With a tank and transfer the fuel that it needs

The fuel can be cachet months in advance of the starship launching. Each tank would have it's on refrigeration system and R.C.S. thrusters operated by remote control. To aid in docking and fuel transfer.
