A city in crisis: How fentanyl devastated San Francisco – BBC Newsnight

More people died of drug overdoses than of Covid in San Francisco over a one year period. Why has one of the richest cities in the world been devastated by drugs? Please subscribe HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUog

Fentanyl is 100 times stronger than morphine and even a tiny quantity can kill. But its low cost has made it a popular recreational drug.

Parts of the city were placed into a state of emergency in December to crackdown on overdose deaths.

And after defunding the police, the city’s mayor has now refunded the police to tackle the issue.

But the democratic mayor and democratic District Attorney are divided on how to fix the problem.

James Clayton reports for Our World and Newsnight.

  1. He's right though you can punish them all you want but that's not helping them you know and it's just making the situation Worse so they can get as tough as they want on it but I don't know what they haven't realized but they've been tough on crime for how many years now and it's killed so many people has 8% success rate so I don't know when they're gonna realize you know what the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result so they keep doing this hard on Crime And war on drugsI don't get realize that that doesn't work there needs to be more sympathy they need to look at these people as human beings and not that they're more supreme being than them because they're not and they could easily be them if something happens in life like a car or something they break something you know anything like that then maybe they would be sitting in their shoes and it's very easy when you haven't walked in that person's shoes to say oh I would never do that but the reality If you had maybe you know gone through what they had gone through I bet in an accident or something like that then you would be just like them ur brain no different brain does not work I mean differently we are all the same so it's very easy to say when you haven't been threw something that I would never do that because you think you're better than somebody but in all reality you would be doing the same exact thing And they don't make it easy for them they don't make it comfortable for them would you want to go into a cold miserable hard place where they strip you of all of your dignity when you're going through the most horrible worst thing ever there's medications that he gives them to make it very comfortable but instead what they do is and what people don't understand is they put them on something called Suboxone and then let me explain something to you you have to completely withdraw from opioid's force before you start it and then once you start the Suboxone you have to take it every single day are you go back into withdrawal right stupid alot ppl get thrown into pirsipitated withdrawal horrible ans will scar anyone from ever trying to get help and then there's a method on which methadone you don't have to withdrawal but the withdrawal from that is even worse n longer so the options that they have are not like there's no options and Suboxone fairly newer drug made for heroine fetenal or carfetnal had not been out came out earlier 2000 and like the treatment centers are bullshit they strip them down they take all the rights to take all their dignity you know you're going through a very horrible uncomfortable thing would you want to be in a place that's not uncomfortable obviously not So until we stop building prisons and we start building actual rehabilitation centers and we stopped tyes you know maybe if we punish them in in that do horrible things to them then we can scare them in to stop having a disease it doesn't work like that it's a pattern that they repeat over and over again you know that they can't get out of without help and I got the options are not out there so I really hope that you know they really start trying to invest money into finding a A treatment and medication options for people people pacifically suffering from fetnal and carfetnal um withdraw and finds something that made for that make withdrawal comfortable easy assessable option more people will die and if you look at how the black community peaceful protest for voting rights after being beaten jailed should have shown American kindness is the way to go forward they bad place no one wants to go threw so again we need to stop thinking hurt punishment of people to do what we want instead helping inspiring pushing deeper into it with no way out they need push narcane nasal spray reverse overdose in seconds so be giving them that finding options that make it easy and successful for people to quite instead brutal mean hard where only maybe small 8 percent will end up clean it is horrible what going on if you treat them like animals don't be surprised when they act like animals

  2. American doctors/health practioners receive ridiculous amounts of money for peddling drugs to people who don't really need them from Pharma companies. Just because they're doctors, it doesn't mean that they aren't as crooked and opportunistic as the common man.

  3. Alas , London Breed would prefer to hire more cops to either beat these people down or , as they are wont to do, the ignore them. The homeless. Sf, had no problem allowing tech go tax free , thereby starving policies. The enemy here is Londond Breed.

  4. Mister Elon Musk could end homelesness in USA all by himself. His net worth allows him to buy an average house ($400.000) for every homeless person (600.000) in the country.

It is not that the money isn't there.

  5. I watch as many news channels as I can. I figured out what's going on, and nobody mentions it. The cartel's want to kill as many people as they can, from the United States. They can't kill us, if they attacked us using conventional weapons. So they are using drugs to do their bidding. Parents need to tell their children that the cartel's want to kill them. That's why we're being flooded with drugs. Do the math. How many have they killed so far? They didn't fire a shot, but they've killed hundreds of thousands of people. Educate your children. Let them know that they are the ones being targeted. The cartel's found a way to beat us. What are you going to do to educate your children?
