My strategy always involves getting that kitchen as fast as possible. Cooking means no down time due to low stamina – which means more money to be made by fishing and bug catching along with foraging. Not to mention more time in the mines and diving. That's just me though. I don't mind spending a lot of money early.
Why do you not like drying all of the sea scavenging loot? So much money!!! It basically doubles the sell value. You can sell an undried and a dried of the same quality and see for yourself – expand the sections of the daily tally to see all the values of what you sold that day. That's what made me realize that this game is all about processing everything.
