Dear Hollywood: Winter is Coming in 2024.

Hollywood is in for a RUDE awakening in 2024. The box office offerings look weak, with only a handful of tentpole movies having a chance at cracking $500 million globally. Analysts are blaming the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes at delaying content output, but the content that’s coming looks pretty lackluster. Is this Hollywood’s year of reckoning?

Additional Context:
The 2024 Hollywood box office outlook is significantly influenced by the aftermath of the SAG-AFTRA strike, which ended recent Hollywood labor disruptions. The strike has already made a noticeable impact on Hollywood’s bottom line at the box office. Movies that are currently hitting theaters are reportedly losing out on as much as 15 percent of their box office potential due to the lack of actor-driven publicity. This is particularly significant as the impacts of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have been mostly deferred, with a months-long gap in the production pipeline expected to become a real problem in the near future, especially for studios dependent on box office revenue.

As studios scramble to save their 2024 projects, the film industry is now facing a backlog of projects and strained resources, including visual effects houses. Major releases affected by the strike include high-profile titles like “Deadpool 3,” “Venom 3,” “Twisters,” and “Gladiator 2.” Studios had to negotiate under high pressure to save the 2024 summer release calendar. Several major titles, including “Snow White” and “Elio” by Disney, have been delayed by months or even a year. The box office suffered a notable drop due to the lack of new releases during the strike, and this downturn is expected to continue into the first quarter of 2024 despite the resolution of the strike. The industry is now in overdrive to get their tentpoles ready for summer 2024 and beyond, which requires a Herculean effort due to the backlog of projects.

Overall, the impact of the SAG-AFTRA strike on the 2024 Hollywood box office is significant. It has led to schedule disruptions, delays in major releases, and a potential decrease in box office revenues. The industry is now working to navigate these challenges and recover from the effects of the strike.

  1. Hollywood deserves the comeuppance. F@ck 'em. They've made crap movies, shoving their Agenda down our throats for years now. It's sad that people are losing their jobs but that is these studio's fault, not mine. I'm not going to pay for crap "entertainment" aimed at propagandizing me. I'd rather watch movies made before this current era that I know I will enjoy.

  2. I really don't care what most of these production houses do anymore. I haven't seen a movie in theaters in years now, just no interest. The quality of stories are just boring. Trying to make a movie contentious instead of interesting has been a failing model for years. They played off the good standing of the audience with bait off old IP's "in the modern age" That is now a phrase that means it's going to be nothing like the OG and will be filled with trash activism ideology. it's boring.

  3. I've seen wonka 4 times in theaters with friends and family. I got the movie cup and even bought the candy. I wanted to hate wonka because i wasn't a fan of the original, but then they found a way to add to the original while making an entertaining and comical movie.

  4. I think, really hope, that Frozen Empire does well. I was apprehensive with Afterlife, but like you, I loved it. I have high hopes for this new one despite some of the casting choices…..*cough* Patton Oswald cough

  5. It's not just the strikes and it's not just the movies…

It's also that inflated cost of living and people having to make decisions about necessities vs luxury purchases. Theatrical showings are more expensive than waiting to see it at home for families. I'm sorry that some don't want to face reality, but people are struggling financially and it's not going to lighten up anytime soon. This year might actually end up being worse.

  6. I thought that the motion picture industry was on the brink of collapse a few years back, especially since we live in an era when product goes to streaming or digital a month after an all-too-brief theatrical run, that the cineplex is pretty much obsolete ($18 for a tub of popcorn is absolutely outrageous), and we have way too many streaming services competing for audiences.

  7. Honestly, my prediction is Planet Of The Apes will end up doing better than Deadpool 3. Deadpool 3 will have a great opening weekend, but I've a horrible feeling it's going to be a woke mess compared to the first 2.

  8. Classic movies. This is the way. I live next to a drive thru theater and last summer they played more classics than ever and stayed busy. Same for the old local theatres. If the multiplex cinemas would go that route as well, it might send a big message to Hollywood about what does and doesn't work.

  11. I suspect one reason why they're targeting other sources of entertainment so heavy is they want to drag those down to their level instead of go back to trying to make proper entertainment but if those other sources exist uncorrupted then they will disappear much faster.
