Video sponsored by Sega. In a Digital Foundry tech evolution special, Alex Battaglia revisits one of his favourite PC series – Company of Heroes – from the beginnings of developer Relic Entertainment, its focus on technological innovation, and the evolution of the COH franchise, from its origins as a PC only series through to its arrival on the current generation consoles.

Soldiers: Heroes of World War II did extensive destruction in a RTS game before Company of Heroes.
"From PC to Consoles, how a strategy epic evolved into a pile of steaming garbage, launched incomplete for the sake of a quick buck turn around and a spit in the face to the longterm fans"
Played the first two, can't even tell which clips are from the third game, it looks so mediocre.
Why not require mouse and keyboard support for consoles instead of shoehorning in controller support?
The only tell it's COH3 is the obnoxious button prompts in the middle of the screen masking the graphics your talking about :/
1: truly unparalleled groundbreaking tech enabled gameplay with great writing and voice acting and well balanced asymmetrical warfare.
2: add a few hit and miss gimmicks and polish it a bit in a new setting
3: console money printer go brrrr
2006 battlefor middle earth 2 with witch king with mods
2006 star wars empire at war with forces of corruption with eaw remake mod
2007 medieval total war 2 with kingdom expansion with third age mod

As this video shows… Relic lost it all since DOW3 and now COH3 bring nothing to the table compared to 1 and 2. i remember how immersive was the Cold tech in COH2, and how modern was COH1 DX10 update. COH3 is just nothing but a glitchy mess. all u have to do to see it is to look at the main menu. and that will tell u everything.
As a novice game developer this kinda videos actually help me a lot in my learning process and analysis, as allways thank you so much for you content, greetings from Peru
does this game have that function to "slow down gameplay" like Call to Arms, by any chance, does anyone know? I only play single player campaigns, i dont fucks with multiplayer.
Great retrospective look at Company of Heroes series (my favourite RTS). Still have my original game on the shelf beside me and I love the COH2 as well. Waiting to get into the third one soon.
Alex should do his own DF Retro, this was nice. I would rename the video though haha
Yes! fucking! Please!
Coh3 is trash
I wonder where we would be if developers had continued that push for simulations and physics. Games would probably be more than just pretty graphics.
Coh 3 is way better 2 and not as good as 1, y’all are delusional if you think 2 is better that ai is absolute downgrade in 2
Appreciate the history lesson, but disappointed that you didn’t cover the game on consoles? How does the control scheme work on controller, performance metrics, graphical makeup etc.
COH3 is a 60 dollar "Early Access" experience and in terms of multiplayer it really doesn't have much to offer compared to previous games. COH2 has double the amount of online players at any given time.
Waiting for Diablo 4 technical review😀
Sorry, but this video is not up to your standards Alex, because it is dishonest and obviously biased because of the sponsorship. CoH 3 is a step-down from CoH 2 tech, not to even talk about how it makes no strides forward, despite it being the year 2023. It's like Relic came to you and told you "you can talk all you want about 1 and 2, but for 3, just say the challenge was bringing it to consoles, and then end the video".

My favorite is CoH1 1.71. DRM free bliss.
And i remember one of the most interesting RTSes ever made was made by relic too. Impossible creatures. It was really something else.
Love it how Alex managed to make a sponsored video 95% not about shitty CoH 3 instead focused on older amazing games !
I got the physical launch edition day one. As a CoH fan since day one (and former PC gamer) i had to get it. It is obviously not using all of the PS5's power, but it is still fun. Idk why there is no in game voice chat so I would have to make a party with the randoms i matchmake with. The controller works VEEEERY well (aside from some unit upgrades) you almost don't miss a mouse&keyboard. I recommend all my PS5 gamers to get it. The more we support relic, the more RTSs we will get on console. I no longer game on PC and missed CoH and AoE. Imagine relic ports dawn of war and the first two CoH for Console ! 👍🏼👍🏼😎
I do like the trick of the title being so long that “Sponsored” is cut off on some screens.
RTS only mouse and keyboard ! . Thank you and have a nice day
The most important question remains unanswered in the video: Is the console port good?
Rts genre died in 2008 and its just been the same games running off momentum ever since with very little improvements.
COH1’s use of Havok genuinely changed the gameplay as they described in the video. COH2 with footprints in snow on the other hand was really just visual window dressing with no actual gameplay impact. Footprints in the snow might be helpful for evading guards in a stealth game but in an RTS you’re not going to win or lose games due to something like that.
The sad reality is that by 2013 when COH2 came out Relic was already well out of its golden age and in steep decline, which became very obvious with the complete failure of Dawn of War 3 just a couple years later. The studio was very much coasting on the reputation of its games from the 90s and 2000s by the time COH2 came out.
The video starts at 12:28
Homeworld remains one of my favorite RTSs of all time, more than twenty years later.
Loving COH3. Coh best rts series and my favorite games especially online. Supporting Relic for sure and COH3 will be amazing eventually (same as COH2).
Love ya DF, I know this is an essay video, but you gotta know we all want to see the DF technical analysis on how the game runs on Xbox Series X|S & PlayStation 5, and how it differs from the PC version & client. Also would like to hear how it performs with controller & console keyboard and mouse.
lol. fluff piece about a new game, wont talk about new game.
id like to call this the sad decay of a relic
Long live COH! Long live RELIC!
All great points until the end. This was clearly sponsored and the end of the video showcasing the new game makes hardly the same quality of argument for the tech (because it can't; there's nothing notable about it).
