  1. I once worked with a guy who's wife is a rocket scientist. Every time he mentioned issue at home. I got a lot of mileage out of the old, well it's not rocket science. He seemed to enjoy it. I never met her. I left too soon because not my dream job came up, but better job than that one and a stepping stone to my dream job. Just 4 years later + dream job! Yes, it was engineering. We were auto mechanics at the prior job.

  2. I met some of designers in April at Langley AFB. Got to talk for about half an hour as the NASA Langley displays werenโ€™t as popular as the aircraft on the runway. The structure design was really the easy part. The materials science required developing new fabrication techniques. One of the problems was the weaving facility wasnโ€™t humidity controlled and some of the fabric degrades when it absorbs water.

  3. You've got the discussion twisted yet again. The reentry path is designed to provide sufficient time to slow the craft to a speed low enough to safely deploy chutes. The friction with the atmosphere provides the braking force. The size of the heat shield is the size of the craft because you have to protect the entire craft and because Earth's atmosphere has sufficient density to provide the requisite braking.

This new design is required primarily for an insertion into the Mars atmosphere. Because it is far less dense than Earths, the size of the shield must be very large compared to the craft to provide sufficient braking force. On the plus side, Martian gravity is lower. But regardless terminal velocity is 5 times greater on Mars…hence the very large shield.
