I guess this is what happens when men with brains of monkeys in tailored expensive suits made in sweatshops in charge of doing politics..
The Nimrod wasn't on 24hr Patrol. A lot of the time Norwegian P3s would be up overnight but not the Nimrod. I thought you might have covered the crashes too. The Nimrod was also used in the Alexander Kielland disaster. I was on duty that night in RCC Pitreavie Castle. That aside, another great video. Thanks for uploading.
My father was director of aircraft supply during this time. He flew up to have a look at them, and condemned them.
Donât be too hard on David Cameron. Putin told him to let the submarines loiter and update their maps so Cameron didnât have a choice. He already spent the money.
Never buy American military equipment.
Glad to know government financial and technological incompetence isn't a uniquely American concept.
Sonar bouys werenât launched from the bomb bay but from rotary launchers at the rear of the aircraft from inside the cabin as were the marker flares
I know people who were involved with MR4A. To entirely blame the government is unfair. The fact you did a Nimrod ep without mentioning Haddon-Cave report is a little odd. Nimrod was cheap initially because they were death traps. Contracts written with no accountability and the RAFs attitude to safety at the time was laughable which led to the deaths of 14 people. BAE won the contract for MR4A and there were actions going on would make your toes curl: the aircraft were/would have been bigger death traps.
Cancelling it without insuring an immediate replacement was insane though.
I couldn't design a more hideous plane if I had a gun to my head.
With Tweedle Dum and Liam Fox axing our defence assets it is a wonder of God Argentina didn't invade the Falkland Islands a second time over.
A new version of the Nimrod should be produced in collaboration with Boeing with recon and stand-off rolls in mind. It should be kept in a multi-role configuration and with weapons bays based on the B1-B design in my opinion. This would allow for the use of rotary launchers that could carry both conventional and nuclear depth charges as well as cruise missiles if tensions call for that level of deterrent.
I worked on some of the sensors etc for the MRA4 which is still covered by the OSA. Somehow our opposite number increased the weight of the kit by 8 tonnes. That made it too heavy.
Saucer of milk for Simon…!!!!
An incredible aircraft. Thanks for sharing.
Great video I used to watch them take of and land when I was a lot younger from Cornwall if my memory serves me right early 80s from Newquay I believe fantastic aircraft destroyed by our useless government !! Very sad đ
On a random note: you mentioned wanting to feature the Burj Khalifa but had concerns about it due to the sheer number of videos about this building that already exist.
So instead, why not feature the Taipei 101? Itâs WAS the tallest building until the Burj Khalifa passed it (itâs currently 11th) and there arenât nearly as many videos about it as there are about the Burj Khalifa. The countermeasures against typhoons, quakes, and bad soil built into the building would be a pretty interesting topic. Or the fact that itâs built on an active fault line (and has allegedly caused seismic activity to increase).
Current world events might also add to the videoâs appeal, with the CCP shooting all those fish around Taiwan with ballistic missiles and whatnotđ
Honestly whilst cancelling the MR4A Nimrod at the point they did was really stupid and left a huge hole in UK capabilities I've always thought they'd have been better putting the systems/equipment on an A320 (or A321) and benefiting from 30-40 years of aviation advances – potentially reinforcing the wings too. That would have led to a very real competitor for the Poseidon and potentially sales/joint project with other countries.
In 1985 I was moved from my post doing major servicing on Nimrod to a nearby base to perform a major servicing on a Shackleton. Because the training on piston engines in the RAF had stopped some 8 to 10 years earlier. . Now do do feel free to ask me about the AEW3. Perhaps about the main processor for the radar which was out of date before the ink was dry on the specification. Or maybe you'd like to know about the computer bank that wouldn't fit through the door? Usual story of politicians not saying what results they wanted but specifying what you had to make.
Nimrod: Making the most from British failure. Est. 1946.
Qv. English Electric Lightning.
Itâs funny, I had been working on Nimrod Mk2 for several years in the mid 2000âs and had never heard of the Mk4 AEW variant until one day, out in the Middle East, I ordered a ânewâ parking brake handle. When I received the ânewâ part in came wrapped in wax paper, with a tag attached stating the part was RTP (Reduce To Produce, the act of taking parts of aircraft being scrapped and putting them into the parts system as serviceable) from 1986! This part was as old as me and had been floating around the stores system for over 20 years!
Yeah Y Know how to get you're hear back! Yeah And Yeah Y am were serious!
I liked the tone of this essay – and the delivery, as ever, enhanced by icy, dripping wit. MR-4 was an outright betrayal of British industry and technology. Again. Yet a bloody gain.
Only when you here whatâs in the public domain that you realise how much never got reported!
I love these videos⌠lose the background musicâŚ
When the Mk4 project was cut the Navy had insisted they could fill the gap left by the Mk2. They couldnât. We know they couldnât. The submarine fleet commanders were pissed.
Spent 11 years on two tours with these aircraft.
As you mentioned, there are a lot of sorties and catches that these aircraft carried out with no public recognition, which was a shame, as they truly defended our shores and the other forces aligned with us.
They most always won the Fincastle (Britain, Canada, Australian, and NZ) Award, due to the engines being inside the wing and jet powered (fastest on task and stealth ish) the submarines couldn't detect them as good.
If you lived here Simon you're distain for the government would mean something.
Well itâs name didnât help it. Nimrod.
OH GOD WHYS IT GOT A TUMOR
Someone really thought they could cross the Atlantic in a Zodiac? There's a candidate for the Darwin Awards.
Refuelled them a couple of times. They had a habit of dumping their fuel all over the pan.
Refuelled them a couple of times. They had a habit of dumping their fuel all over the pan.
Itâs worth noting that a lot of the nimrod crews that were made redundant were offered very handsome âgolden handshakesâ to rejoin the RAF on the P3.
I used to strip and re paint these beasts awesome aircraft
I worked on the AEW Nimrod software suite – and we were also well ahead of the US software in signal analysis methodologies in my personal opinion. We were all devastated by the cancellation at the time.
A magnificent aircraft. Miss them flying over Corwall. As a cadet I spent many hours getting some air time.
It was a total fudge up cancelling the MK4
2 words, Haddon-Cave
I don't think this chump knows what insurrection means. I think you meant INFILTRATION.
A lot of the pictures you showed were of the R1 and not the MR2. The MRA4 was still based in a 1940s designed aircraft, there was also a number of known but not addressed issues (see HC report following 2006 crash). The posiden requires a lot less support and it shares the airframe with the E7, also operated by the RAF. The AEW system was riddled with bugs and AWCS operated by the US, NATO and French ment alot more interoperability with NATO to with some ac were declared to operate with. The RI repalcment gives a lot more room for mission crew, with the R1 always struggled with.
