This Week in Sportsball: NFL Week Seventeen Edition (2024)

Proudly brought to you by the remains of what was my sanity: The secret is that it was never there.

I hope everyone enjoyed the Christmas/Hanukkah season, but a new year means more Sportsball to be shoved down our throats. We had Wednesday games. We had Saturday games. We had a bunch of unsightly football, but all football is to be cherished in the grand scheme of things. A good bit has been settled, but there are still a few questions remaining.

One more week to go. Buckle up, kids: This is going to be a bumpy ride.

  1. I just need Bo Pix to show up one more time, so my Dolphins can sneak into the postseason. (Assuming we win, of course. Which I can’t lol) whether we would lose in the first round or not is irrelevant, we just need a shot lol

  2. Wait Greg Gumbel died? Damn I honestly had no idea. And I guess I was so used to seeing what he looked like decades ago that I didn't even realize how old he truly is. Although I'd still say nowadays he would have died kind of young being in his 70s. My mom is 76 and she doesn't show any signs of dying anytime soon

  3. The 'rare payout' thing cost the farm very little, and they'll happily do it again! They got great publicity. Insurance companies exist to underwrite that stuff. You tell them the contest and some info they need to calculate the odds and the payout, and they're like "okay, $1 million and we estimate it's about 50,000:1 odds, we'll charge you $500 to insure it." The business doesn't care because they'd rather pay $500 than have a possible $1 million loss, and the insurance company loves it because infinity $1 million contests at better than 2000:1 odds where they get $500 each time are house money.

  4. The NY Giants definitely should have been a contender for yearly low cow. Letting S Barkley go to a division rival and rush for 2k yards plus the most hilarious 2 pt fail in history. 5 pts get some superglue for that plunger on his head!

  5. TREE…best recap of the NFL in the business. And far more watchable than the slop player each week. The last few years the NFL has become unwatchable. I hate NE with the best of them but at least when they were winning super Bowls it was when the league was good. KC is trouncing the League when it literally is at a 1970s nadir. I'd check out entirely now if it wasn't for your fantastic coverage.

  6. Hey, the Jets as LOL Cow could be a good thing. Note Dame won it after the game vs NIU was all the motivation they needed to be in the semi for the champ. So hold out hope Jets, your only 20 players away from making the playoffs!

  7. I was expecting Tree to be a lot harder on the Giants for ruining their tank. Instead, he shredded the Colts just as much as Drew Lock did on Sunday.

At this point, the Colts and embarrassing losses at the end of the season go together like PB&J.

  8. Being a Colts fan is pain. We haven't been a playoff contender in years. We need to blow everything up, fire everyone, and start over again because what we're doing now hasn't worked since the days of Peyton Manning.

  9. Aaron Rodgers became the most sacked quarterback in NFL history, threw an interception, and got flagged for unnecessary roughness. In the span of two plays.

And then, this week he said his time with the Jets was "the best two years of my life."

  10. How did the White Sox not win! (lose) I dont think people understand how special that is. We will probably never see a season as bad as the 2024 White Sox. I dont think there is any other sport in the world where you can see your team take the field 121 times of the year and lose. We see the butt fumbling Jets almost every season.

  11. For the Redskins, this is their first road playoff game since 2007. They have lost five playoff games in a row, the last three being home games and the two road losses both in Seattle. Their last playoff win was in Tampa Bay in 2005 when they were led by Mark Brunell making a career comeback after the Jaguars potential dynasty floundered. They may play in Tampa again, or in Los Angeles or Philadelphia. Against the Bucs they are 1-1 in the playoffs, both games in Tampa and in both games neither team managed to score 20 points or more. Against the Rams they are 2-1, with their one loss being their only trip to Los Angeles in the postseason ever, a 19-10 loss back in 1974. They have played the Eagles only once in the playoffs, on the road in 1990, and defeated them 20-6.

  12. FUN FACT: The play being called at the end of the video by Greg Gumbel was the longest play in NFL history, a 109 yard return touchdown. FUNNER FACT: The Vikings won that game 35-17, largely in part to another record being set by Adrian Peterson having 296 rushing yards

  13. 25:16 As a fan of a division rival in the 561, I am pleased. Palm Beach County is full of transplants anyway, both in origin and in loyalty to other sports franchises. Especially fans of the entire AFC East. From Pats fans to Bills Mafia. Even though my Dolphins are circling the drain of elimination, there is one good thing: They are not the New York Jets!
