The Criterion Episode | The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast Episode 39

This week on the pod Seth Meyers is joined by Jake Tapper, Mike Schur, and Alan Sepinwall for a special breakdown of which digital shorts make the Criterion collection! They discuss what other categories the digital shorts can fall into, including “additional reading” and “Kim’s videos,” plus they talk about some favorite memories of The Lonely Island and SNL over the years!

  1. I am annoyed as Body Fusion is not Kims Videos/ Additional Reading. I think how they talked about it on the pod is so impressive how they where able to accurately achieve the look of those videos and everyone's performance really brings up the quality also. Any other Quaids argee with me?

  2. Is the Criterion collection a bit or are you actually releasing a Criterion collection, because I feel like maybe you should. Maybe it's just nostalgia talking, but I want a physical media collection. Fuck digital. I mean, not digital shorts. Love digital shorts. I wish it was hot enough to wear shorts.

  3. Seth Myers: "imagine it's October 2001"
Mike schur: "it's October 2001? Well there's anthrax in the building we have to leave"
Dude that was such a quick witted and hilarious response that it made me think ”ahhh yes, this is why parks and rec, the good place & Brooklyn 9-9 are among my all time favorite comedies". Well done schur.

  4. What these slightly older guys don’t realize is when Laser Cats came out us younger guys had been making videos like that in high school with our friends. And now one of them was actually on SNL! It was like one of us made the big time and maybe the rest of us could too

  5. 36:05 United Way is a top ten all time SNL experience- this was before the Mannings were omnipresent, and hearing him toss his squeaky-clean image away in 3 minutes was a revelation. I laughed my ass off.. and it still holds up! Peyton cussed those kids out sooo fluently

  6. Here to say that Laser Cats as a whole should be in The Criterion Collection. It’s too hard to say only one is great and they are important as a collective. It should be viewed as the “Laser Cats Box Set.”

You think EVERY Godzilla movie should be in the Criterion Collection? No way, but as a piece of pop culture? Yes way.

  7. Well, now we need one of these episodes with Bill Hader, someone who's actually been in the Criterion Closet multiple times who can REALLY judge what's Criterion-worthy. Bonus points if he hasn't seen any of these ahead of time and just keeps comparing them to Luis Buñuel movies none of the other shock jocks have seen.

  8. Always some weird white dude trying to virtue signal just so he can keep his job having to try and protect gay and Japanese people because he afraid of the pc police. It’s comedy and was all done in good taste.

  9. Tossing in my vote (again) for People Getting Punched Before Eating- I think this is the one I rewatched the most out of TLI’s early shorts, and seeing all the other support for it here in the comments I’m not alone in my love for it

  10. Rewinding for a sec – you were way too hard on yourselves for My Testicles. I mean, not Criterion but it was WAY better than you remember it being. Love the throwback hip-hop lingo and as Lorne would say (or as you would say Lorne would say) "You see Tom Hanks, Amy, Maya and it has the LOOK"
