Mega Man inspired-games are a plenty, too.
I absolutely love the Bioshock games. I've played Bioshock Infinite plenty of times and never get tired of it. Portal and Journey have been in my backlog for a while, really need to try those lol I recently picked up a physical copy of Celeste because I had been interested in it for a while. Amazing game. I recently started playing, Record of Lodos War-Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth, and am thoroughly enjoying it π€π»
Surprised no Slay the Spire on this list! I feel like it really opened the world's eyes to deck builders and so many have followed in its steps
Re: souls-likes and difficulty, this is a hill I will always fight on. Joe, you said that while you advocate for accessibility options, you recognize that not every game is for everyone. I truly feel it doesn't need to be that way. A game might not be for everyone based on its theme, story or aesthetic, but difficulty should never prevent someone from being able to play and enjoy a game. I think what really ticks me off about most devs is this: adding easier difficulty options would cost them literally nothing in terms of credibility or souls-like badassery. People who want that grueling level of challenge would still have the option, while those with accessibility-related issues would be welcome to play something otherwise unavailable to them. There seems to be this mentality that even adding those accessilibity options will somehow tarnish the game, and I for one am sick of the gatekeeping. P.S. Excellent list with perfectly-argued choices π
The influence of Castlevania II: Simon's Quest has led to the creation of two indie games I love, Infernax and Dominique's Curse. As a huge fan of both metroidvanias and classicvanias, I don't think I can ever get enough Castlevania or Metroid-influenced games. Of course, I also love those kinds of games with souls-like influences mixed in as well, so I'm glad these styles of games have become popular because that leads to more great indies for me to enjoy!
I would add Hollow Knight. Every new Metroidvania is definitely influenced by it in one way or another. π€π
I would put rogue legacy instead of hades.
Undertale's influence is more understated than most people realize; there are SO many games (a lot of which are still in the works) that have taken its aesthetic of a dark world with bright colors and strange denizens that aren't just "renamed humans, renamed humans with pointy ears, and renamed short humans with beards", and I am SO here for more abstract character and world designs!
I'd say Vampire Survivors reshaped the indie scene as well for not only bringing back to life to a genre but inspiring so many similar "bullet heaven/shmup" games. Feels like every week there is a new one released on steam.
Every game should have portals. Yes every game.
Harvest moon too
I thought for sure weβd see Doomπ¦©
