Most likely we sent Ukraine the M483A1 155MM shells loaded with 88 dual-purpose grenades (64 M42 and 24 M46). The M42 and M46 produce a shaped-charge jet is expelled downward while the body bursts into a large number of small fragments. The jet is capable of penetrating approximately 2.75 inches of homogeneous armor plate. Antipersonnel effects are obtained by fragmentation of the grenade body. These were designed to stop Soviet armor during an invasion into Germany. Production was stopped in 1990, so all shells are 34+ years old and at the end of their shelf life. What better way to get rid of them than letting Ukraine use them. (I.E. cluster munitions)
