Grandma swims historic 29.7 miles from shark-infested SF waters

California grandmother Amy Gubser, who started marathon swimming 10 years ago as an escape from hectic shifts as a pediatric nurse, put her name in the record books after completing a 29.7-mile swim through frigid, shark-infested waters from the Golden Gate Bridge in the San Francisco Bay to the remote Farallon Islands. NBC’s Morgan Chesky shares her journey on TODAY.

  1. Wow what an inspirational story this woman is really incredible. Doing hard things doesn't have to equate to doing crazy things. I think this was incredibly dangerous and risky. But she followed her passion and for that. I really admire her. I also have tremendous respect for her. As a nurse, a mother and grandmother and friend, what an amazing woman she defied the odds.

  2. This is extremely deceptive and over hyped. Listen closely to last 4 minutes. She hired FIVE shark watchers to ride a boat alongside her, constantly monitoring for sharks. Pretty easy to survive when you got 5 people ready to warn you so that you could hop out of water at any time. It's like the people who climb Mt. Everest. The cool ones are the ones who do it with ZERO oxygen tanks. In this case, if this were Everest she had unlimited oxygen tanks and Sherpas helping her

  3. I don't know how this woman was able to deal with the thought of the sharks. I mean swimming on the surface in these waters is incredibly dangerous. To be able to swim all that way and suppress those thoughts is about as impressive as it gets.
