The funny thing about cross code is that no one else has been able to make anything that comes close to what it does without it either feeling lacking or else being considered a shittier Cross Code (No decent Cross code likes sadly). A much older game now but still really good.
Also, even though i like Final Fantasy 7 a lot, i personally like Final Fantasy 9 more. A lot of the tacked on extras in 9 just feel much more worth it to do, having skills tied to weapons might make you want to use different weapons rather then just use the one with the highest number and though not everyone likes some of the character designs, some of their backstories and development are some of the best i have seen (Except Garnet, she can stay relegated lol).
As for RPGs i played recently:
Legends of Grindea is pretty fun with a story based around item grinding and shows all the benefits (and consequences) of being immersed in collecting.
And Shadows of Adam, a nice short well polished RPG with decent and challenging turn based combat, the pixel visuals are amazing from the very start of the game and has the dna of older final fantasies with direct references to FF6 and Mystic Quest of all things, and frankly I'm all for it. Recommend getting it with the Guild dlc to add in the ability to combine accessories to make powerful team mates. The story isn't the best but the rest makes up for it imo and its one that some people would appreciate.
Monster Sanctuary is/was one of my favorite indie games that I have played. I kind of want to replay it now, but I have so many games in my backlog 😅
Buy the final fantasy pixel remaster. You get six rpg’s for $75. That lands you way under $20 a game
Games i suggest is Disgaea 1-2. They are on Vita,Steam and ps2 and steam it cost 20.
