The Unicorn Has Landed, and it turned out to be good. Well, mostly landed, the demo is promising, anyway. This is well beyond what I had possibly hoped for mechanically, and each encounter seems to have tons of potential replay-ability to it. It’s taking more notes from Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen overall, but with all of the mechanics you’d want and then some from all over the genre. There’s plenty of the better Fire Emblem stuff, the map exploration of Triangle done better, an unexpected amount of Tactics Ogre esque skills, some other mechanics that almost feel Fell Seal like, with unique unit weird counter maneuvers that made me think of Symphony of War. Hell, the timing mechanic XCOM 2 likes to push actually works beautifully here for the Expert Mode. It made me think of Hard West 2 at first, but feels solidly Ogre Battle at the end of the day. If you like weird strategy, this is really brilliant so far.

Is this on Expert? Cause man they throwing EVERYTHING at you!
I don't recommend changing leader during battle as I find it wasting valor point which is pretty important and somewhat difficult to come by during battle, especially those valor skills can be useful during battle. Furthermore, for those arrow or magic strike, you will need to set the leader of that unit and within range to do that assist. Those stamina can be very important as it doesn't let an unit trying win just by itself. Also need to plan when to rest as it can't attack or even defence during the period in rest and plus out of stamina also can't move. Try to take out towers asap as it can turn the tide of your chance of winning to losing as you getting damage for no reason. By the way, provoke can be a very good valor skill to use to control the flow of the battle.
legman and potato, my go to. so much to watch.. will save this for saturday morning. gonna need cool tutorial and tip videoas plz
Gameplay is perfect, and I wouldn't be surprised if the story picks up later on too.
This is better than I could have dreamed. It's like they made a game for me! Love Ogre Battle 64, but had no idea others loved it as much as I do. What a great game!
People says it's just Ogre Battle, but it's more than Ogre Battle. Which leads me to think MOST people did not play Ogre Battle.
I feel the same as you man, I'm a diehard Ogre Battle fan that has memorized the entire lore by heart. After playing the demo twice over, I do not regret my purchase of the special edition.
Orge Battle Is Back — 🎉🎉
I really love how Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga reminded people about squad based turn systems, it's really exciting to think where this system can evolve if further resurgence will last.
Damn, to think an indie studio making an RPG maker game would potentially cause spiritual ressurection of MotBQ.
It sounds really crazy but it's Korean Mahwha's that got me interested in this game, even my 5yr old son loved the story of the demo :).
Cant get through the first 5 minutes its everywhere and has no focus
Im glad somebody stuffed Fire Emblem inside of Ogre Battle. Like a Turducken but good for your heart
Totally agree about the expected bad guy twist. The guy they presented in the demo is not giving final boss vibes.
I love how your starting class is "Lord" too, the whole thing seems like a love letter to Ogre Battle
I just finished my demo run on PS5. I must preface that I am already a huge fan of VanillaWare, but by THE GODS have they crafted a masterpiece. Every aspect I have experienced so far has been crafted with not just wisdom, not even just care, but true artistry. The quality of life features are thorough and plentiful. Of course the artistic side is splendid but that is the minimum I expect. I must say this is one of the more fun combat systems I've got to explore this side of FFVII REMAKE.
i have to say i'm a die hard ogre battle fan but I'd say even just the 7 hour demo i'm liking this way better.
Strategy games are my absolute least favorite genre, HOWEVER, and you might wanna consider this train of thought for your next choice of game even if the genre doesn't resonate, *in Vanillaware we trust*, so I'll give it a go, I know I'll find a game I'll finish and enjoy
Imagine coming from the wonky Legion Ogre Battle 64 mechanic to the godsend Swap feature here. Damn this game is gonna be so good
I'm glad it's not just me gettin my ass kicked by this.
Its such a missed opportunity (and revenue stream) to not release this on Steam.
for me it's the opposite with TS and this game. I thought the writing in TS had a better pacing, felt like a pixel version of game of thrones. Games that make me cringe hard would be fire emblem engage. Really loving the game so far and just playing through the demo, I already know it's going to be my GOTY.
First time I have a reason to buy a console in years (I'm getting a Switch). So excited for this one.
btw Check your DMs, Coffee I did some research for what you could do for a review copy.
The fact that downed units can still gain experience (at least on normal, havent played hard) is extremely helpful
Day 1 purchase.
Looked to me like the love child of Dragon Force (Saturn) and Ogre Battle. So hyped.
Summoning phantoms was addicting in Sacred Stones, but now I can summon entire squads?! Load the cannon fodder!
I am so excited for this now
Already pre ordered the collector for my switch ❤❤❤❤❤
Vanillaware just doesn’t disappoint
PS5 ?
Ever layer I've peeled back from this game shows me the thought and care of this 10 year project. This is definitely the evolution of a game like OG Ogre Battle and so much more. OB64 was good but clearly miles away from what it could have been had they been able to keep the same director.
Still a shame that Atlus wouldn't get you a free key for this. I'd bet that you'll have the most quality content on the game in the coming months.
Just started playing through Knight of Lodis again, & I’m beyond excited to hear of a new trpg that carries on the spirit. I grew up with ogre battle & other games of the like. This looks like exactly what I need to scratch that itch 🙌
I was glad to see Yuzu supports the demo 100% already so I've been playing that (though I haven't tried it on the Deck,) but I have the collector's edition on pre-order (mainly for the artbook.) Still wish this were on PC; up-resed at 1440p looks great.
What I find funny is a few friends mentioning the game being an auto battler; I knew of Ogre Battle and have over 70 hours of Symphony of War but never thought of them as one since they're tactical strategy. I always viewed auto battler as the recent popularity of those MOBA mods.
Ogre battle?! Tell me more!
PC release?
Finally I can stop playing orge battle 64
I think i know why you can't manually name characters.
The game has an online PvP system where the names of your characters may be visible to other players. So they would have to either implement a filter/censor system, or restrict to premade names.
I love you enthusiasm!
What did you think of Himeko Sutori? I know it isn't RTS, but it feels like the devs were at least inspired by OB.
I am pissed about the 7 hour time limit. I already preordered the game let me just play chapter 1 without rushing. People saying this is a generous demo have probably played a lot of shit demos I guess. I don't play many demos but all the ones I have played did not have a time limit.
Ogre Battle is back baby!
The real question is, why arnt party grinds 4×4!
Nice 47 min of viking spirits
I wish they would wake a sequel to ogre battle 64 with the same gameplay/style
I dont see it on steam, where do i procure this title? If its got ogre battle fighting, freedom of order, sngle of attack and disgaea stat growth choice. I will by buying it soon day one. Something i have not done since xbox 360 CAME OUT!!!!
Vanillaware only has 39 employees and most of them are artists rather than engineers/developers. So yeah PC development would be difficult
Nice review
