  1. Failure to hunt or at least harass bears teaches them the area is theirs alone. Not educating bears to avoid humans is guaranteed to cost someone their life, along with the bear(s).

Coyotes have learned to run if they see a human with a rifle or a car that suddenly slows down and that car shot at them last week. (True story) Otherwise if left unmolested coyotes get very bold when they team up. Bigger the yote mob the more brazen they are and more dangerous to every animal including humans. To have a few yotes in the group with some fear of lethal lead is a benefit.
No experience with wolves but I'd wager they'd learn fast like yotes.

  2. Im an avid outdoorsman, been hunting & fishing as far back as when I was able to pack my own gear into the regional highland lakes, and shoulder my own 12. g for waterfowl & 308. for the various 4 legged game animals. Ive also been all over Alaska, Sitka, Cordova, Seward, ans yes of course Kodiak Island. Im also a bow hunter, Im good with compounds & even a recurve but my true love is my crossbow. To the Brown Bear we all smell like slow meat period, bear spray is better then nothing but not effective far to often. I dont & wont ever hunt Brown's or any bearfor that matter with sharp sticks (arrows / bolts) and any bow hunter that goes after them with any type of bow & bear spray as protection for close encounters, your a bigger man then me & I applaud you! Never ever ever as in no way under any circumstances ever FOLLOW A WOUNDED BROWN BEAR INTO THE BUSH IF YOU EVER WANT TO SEE YOUR FAMILY AGAIN !!!

  5. I mean no disrespect to anyone, I personally wouldn't go into bear country period, with out a proven Bear Spray, and sufficient pistol, rifle, or shot gun. Not just for bears!

  6. Here is my take on bear attacks. Officials constantly say bear attacks are uncommon, yet there are enough to keep Atticus busy making videos! Too many attacks for me to hike in brown bear country. Although I have hiked in black bear country. Have made it to age 75 with no scars from bear claws!

  7. I believe bear spray is never enough and having a .44 mag revolver on a chest holster just makes common sense in areas with bears. If laws say no firearms, then stay out of the area. The bear spray game can be played by rangers who have no choice in the matter. Living off grid? get the .44 and get used to the weight. Keep it in good condition.
