A car’s thermostat regulates the flow of coolant through the engine cooling system. The thermostat ensures your engine will reach the operating temperature as fast as possible. A thermostat controls the coolant flow entering and leaving the engine,

Why thermostats fail?
The entire system works well until the metal rod corrodes. That corroded rod damages the rubber seal and the wax leaks out. Once that happens, the thermostat stops opening, coolant stops flowing and your engine overheats. The result can be catastrophic engine failure costing several thousand dollars.

Fortunately, a thermostat failure is one of the many car problems your can diagnose and fix yourself. Here are the signs your car thermostat is failing:

1 Overheating Engine.
The main symptoms of a failing thermostat are related to engine overheating. It can be easily noticed because the temperature gauge in the vehicle will probably read unusually high.

2 Engine run cold.
If the thermostat becomes stuck in the open position, there is continuous flow of coolant into the radiator causing the engine to run cold.

3 Temperature Fluctuations or Erratic changes in temperature.
Thermostat failure will commonly cause the whole cooling system functions erratically and fluctuates. If the needle spikes and drops, a thermostat failure may be to blame.

4 Heater fluctuations or Cabin Temperature Changes.
The coolant warms up the heat inside of your car. Therefore, you might experience temperature fluctuations inside the car heater if the thermostat does not do its job properly to keep a steady temperature in the car’s engine.
If you happen to notice that the temperature inside your cabin suddenly drops and then rise again, this can be a sure shot symptom of a failing thermostat that requires replacement.
If both your temperature gauge and the heat inside the car fluctuate, it is definitely a good time to check the thermostat.

5 Coolant Leakage & Steam from engine
One of the most crucial signs of a failing or failed thermostat is coolant leakage. If the thermostat is not working properly, the hot coolant in the engine coolant chamber will find a way to escape because of too high pressure.

6 Strange Noises From The Engine Bay.
Gurgling, knocking and rumbling sounds coming from the engine might be the result of boiling coolant caused by a stuck valve or by a worn-out thermostat. If the thermostat is faulty, you will experience strange noises from within the engine bay. These noises can arise from within the radiator, or the engine or even both. Resembling a knocking, boiling or gurgling sound, these strange noises can indicate a failed thermostat and a lot many problems in addition to it.

7 Full Expansion Tank.
If the thermostat flap remains closed, no coolant can escape to the radiator. The coolant inside heats up and begins to convert to steam, while the coolant inside the radiator remains unchanged.
So if you see the temperature gauge rise and the radiator tank is filled with water, you most likely have a problem with the thermostat. A rising coolant level can also mean that the car is about to overheat.

8 Increased fuel consumption.

Both engine overheating and engine overcooling can largely increase exhaust emissions and damage fuel economy. This happens because the vehicle is not able to reach its operating temperature. In this case, thermostat failure symptoms will most probably be translated into increased fuel consumption and a resulting unexpected spike in monthly utility bills.

  1. I changed out my water pump and the thermostat. Engine ran great . Had a leak then fixed it. Then it started over heating again. Checked everything nothing out of place. Before it over heated again i was able to bleed the coolant after that i couldn't.5 series BMW. Engine light came on too when i had the parts changed out. Got a scan found out it was the thermostat. Swapped it out but this shit still over heats. Checked all my fuses i have no idea what it could be at this point

  2. When mine went out on my 17 Camaro SS the check engine light came on I noticed the temperature gauge wasn't showing any engine temperature. I checked a repair book and the removal of the thermostat was going to be a nightmare. The throttle body had to removed along with the intake. A mechanic friend of mine said it was a 4 hour job. I paid him $150 to do it for me. I remember when a thermostat job wasn't too overly complicated, I guess those days are gone. Also on another note I want to let anyone who uses straight antifreeze instead of 50/50 premix, NOT to use tap water to mix the straight antifreeze. The calcium, iron and other chemicals will clog up the passages inside the block; use distilled water only. Distilled water can be bought at the grocery store and it's inexpensive. Distilled water has the minerals removed from it and when mixed with straight antifreeze will not clog up the coolant system.

  3. Replacing my thermostat hoping it helps. I have a 2011 Lexus gs350 well on startup it will literally run for almost 10min before coming off idle basically ,seems to me the thermostat is taking to long to open and let it get to run temp 🤔

  5. I have a 2007 cadilaac dts itsniberheating , I checked if it had coolant , it doesn't have any, just water , could it be t needs colorant? It gets operated and I stop the motor and it takes 2 gallons if water, is that normal?any help would be appreciated thanks

  6. A failing thermostat will usually get stuck open or open too quickly. Basically the engine won't reach operating temp and your heater won't put out heat. I have yet to find a thermostat failing to open and causing overheating although it is not uncommon.

  7. I’m Lucky that Checked 🙏🏼😅 a New [Reputable Brand] thermostat b4 installing,’ by the usual means’, then @ a closer inspection finding the part didn’t have ANY of the Popular Brand Name’s, usual, Specifications, Proudly templated on to the Part/thermostat 🪧 ⚠️
