8 months ISOLATED in a space colony simulation: would you endure it?

Nestled high on the northern slopes of Mauna Loa, the world’s most active volcano, the HI-SEAS habitat simulates life on the moon or Mars for crews who live here in isolation for up to 8 months testing the limits of interplanetary off-grid homesteading.

Inside a 36-foot-diameter, 2-story dome, they have a full-kitchen/dining room, a living room/ workout space, 2 composting toilets, one urinal, one shower and 6 slivers of bedrooms, plus an engineering bay.

The solar panels and water tanks are monitored by sensor from inside to be sure nothing is over-used. If anything goes wrong with the equipment, the crew can contact “Mission Control” for help, but they need to make all fixes on their own.

Director Kato Claeys has been on multiple missions and feels life at the “hab” is second best to a trip to Mars. She gave us a full tour of their round home and we took a “moon walk” through lava fields looking for local lava tubes.

  1. That is not right …really because I got nothing except trouble from that person associated to a group–undermining someones authority…absolute nightmare. I wish you could understand what I mean I really really do. Like a home where you have directions for things, was just undermined completely and that is wrong scenario…

  2. Kirsten, it's hard to believe you didn't know about lava tubes. Lava Beds National Monument in the northeast corner of California is worth a visit. It can be a good day trip before or after visiting Crater Lake in Oregon. Lots of driving involved and reservations are must for Crater Lake whether at the closest campground or at the Lodge.

I had to wait to comment on the absolute waste of time and energy to plan human occupation of Mars. Research can be fun yet I believe profoundly that the time could be spent more productively in other research.

  3. Mars is worthless. It would be way easier to "terraform" the earth (like those lavafields). We cant even do this, why do we have the hubris to try to do it on mars. Wasted ressources. The dangers to eradicate us from the earth are mostly the same that would wipe out the mars enclave.
