#621 The Lonely Grave of Mona Bell, Murdered Red-Light Queen of Death Valley's Rhyolite Ghost Town

Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #621
Date of adventure: 3/29/22

In Death Valley’s Rhyolite ghost town, legend tells of a beautiful young “working girl” who was murdered by her boyfriend — and was laid to rest in a lonely grave in the desert, thanks to prudish townsfolk not allowing her to be buried in the cemetary. Today, visitors from all over the world leave flowers, high heels and other items at her gravesite…but somehow, despite my many visits to  Rhyolite, I had never been to her grave! Join me as I search for the lonely grave of Mona Bell…and tell her tragic tale.

  1. So sad 😞 …. Your plea after you lay your beautiful rose 🌹 on Mona’s grave … “Please don’t steal it.” That’s says a lot for where we are in this country. Sad 😢 RIP Mona. 🥀 🙏 👠 💄

  2. Almost Everybody is a prostitute ( just not in a se*ual sense). The ladies of the night these days prefer the title se*workers.
I appreciated your story of the 2008 crash and being left with a house in your name and a mortgage. In this modern age with so many jobs for women, and with your education and talent, that you were scouring CL, it makes sense to understand that women back in the day were probably driven into se*work by a combination of circumstance and desperacy.

  4. They may have buried her in Washington but I agree with you because I believe that wherever you die that's where your spirit was released.. that's if we actually have spirits but anyway I digress..

  6. You take us to such evocative places! I can feel the lives of these miners and the women who followed them! Thank you for great narration and fine videography!

  7. Mona Bell, it turned out, had been born Sarah ‘Sadie’ Isabelle Peterman in 1887. On the night she died she was only 20 years old and still legally the wife of another man.

Clinton Columbus Heskett had eloped with Sadie to Colorado when she was just 18 and they’d been married less than a year when Fred Skinner whisked her off to Nevada. Heskett had been searching for her ever since.

Heskett arrived in Rhyolite within a few days of the murder, gave his statement to the police and collected the battered body of his once lovely young wife. He escorted her back to her family in Ballard, where Sadie Heskett was buried at the Crown Hill Cemetery in a plot hastily purchased by her father.
