Celtic fusion fiddler, Serena, thinks there are five crucial elements to successful musical collaboration. She says; “there is a way to find the right people to have those conversations with”. In this poignant talk, she reflects on how being authentic, knowing what you want, being curious, assuming other people know something you don’t and being open to change can create music that transcends genres and boundaries.
Serena Smith is a grade 8 violinist who teaches violin and runs music workshops. Her real passion is performing; whether it’s playing solos in weddings or as a busker on the London Underground, while leading an orchestra or leading her band. Serena started playing violin in school at the age of 9 then picked up Irish fiddle tunes as a teen after she found Irish céilí dancing. Serena has been playing in folk bands ever since and recently secured funding from Arts Council England to form her own band. Over the last 12 months Serena has been on a great journey to create new Celtic Fusion music and form new musical collaborations.

This came in handy. I'm currently at the verge of collaborating with over 50 music artistes and I've seen some of the looming pitfalls. I'm glad with this, I know how to reduce the impact or totally avoid them. Grrracias!

Made it to the end and didn't hear the word "patriarchy" once! What happened TED?
1) Be your authentic self. Are the other collaborators a good fit with your goals and skills? Do they have collaboration skills?
2) Know what you want. What are your goals? Ask for what you want. Agree on who does what and by when. Read the fine print. Who has the final say?
3) Be curious. Try new things. Try working with new people.
4) Assume the other person knows something you don't. Don't give up all the creativity to your collaborators.
5) Give the ideas of others a serious try. Be open to change.
I really like her accent! It's like, middle class, Midwestern English, with hints of Irish? Cool stuff! 🙂
