5.45 vs 5.56: Which Is Better In 12.12.30? #ad

Today we’ll be looking through all the updated number for 5.45 and 5.56 ammo post buffs, to decide which rounds are superior at different stages of the patch progression, ranges and players.

5.45 typically works well in the early game due to availability of the weapons whereas 5.56 is much more limited until slightly higher trader levels and the flea market. Another problem with 5.56 early is the massive gap between M855 and M856A1 on penetration, which makes it very hard to use successfully before completing the Cult Part 1 on Peacekeeper.

However, once unlocked 5.56 has some big damage advantages against the 5.45 counterparts, and specifically fragmentation causes these rounds to deal significantly more to our opponents in general.

  1. EDIT: I think I'm wrong? Chance for crit is the opposite of probability of getting exactly 0 failures, so is 55%(?). Check links below, math is hard.

TL:DR 8:24 Chance of 1 or more fragmentations in 2 shots is actually ~44% not >50% for a 33% fragmentation chance per shot

Math is wrong here on fragmentation chance. Since the chance of getting a fragmentation is a random variable with consistent probability, is unaffected by previous trials (shots) and only has two possible states (you crit or you don't i.e. true or false), I think you can describe the chance to crit as a Bernoulli Variable. To calculate the odds of getting n or more successes you can use Binomial Distribution. Our experiment has a "unfair coin" since we only have a .33 chance of getting a fragmentation when we hit the target. Basically you multiply the chance of success of all the events by the chance of the failure of an event (if we are only checking our first 2 shots on target). So in 2 shots, I can multiply 2/3 (success) by 2/3 (failure) to see we actually have a 4/9 or .444 repeating chance of getting a fragmentation in 2 shots.

I did a lot of digging and research to figure this out, as I am not super knowledgeable on mathematics; only ever took a few statistics courses (that I dropped lol) 🤓

  2. If you can find as much 5.45 BS on Reserve as i have (check the loose ammo spawns) it's a fantastic round early wipe. And because you can't flea it, you might as well use it.

  3. I get so much BT 545 for free, I scav in reserve and LH loot all the ration supply crates for Tushonka Lrg and 120pcs BT boxes. And once every 2 or 3 scav runs I find 120pcs boxes of BS and 30packs of 7N

  4. Last wipe is used 5.42 well into the late game only swapping when I started using M80. I find 5.450BT,BS and BP all of the time on woods and almost never buy ammo for my 5.45AK's.last wipe I even found some PPBS and 7N40 on woods.

  5. I do runs on Woods and Reserve and I literally have thousands of rounds of BS ammo stockpiled. Whereas M856A1 the ammo minimum required to even pen decent armour early/mid wipe, is heavy limited and is basically equivalent to BP/BT and yet can't even be bought from flea market. Including the fact you can craft the guns, and find ammo 5.45 wins straight out as you can run meta builds with top tier ammo cheaper than the attachments alone for 5.56 average gun, while being cheaper, easier to obtain and even less recoil IMO it should be clear which is the winner. Because it's not even deciding which is meta as 7.62×39 will be better than both anyway, so it's only deciding factors are most likely 'availability' and 'budget'.

  6. I would normally use 545: the ballistics are good and it has been plentiful so far, have a decent bit of BS and BT from scavving into Reserve; but it appears I should be making 856A1 in my WB2 – you changed my mind!

  7. Super tedious to do, but for 5.45 and 7.62 load every other round with US ammo and the AP round of your choice. The recoil reduction with every other shot helps hold a burst on target, and the back and forth with piecing and high flesh damage does some serious work. Great for headshots on bosses or reverting to "leg meta" on others.

  8. The fact that we’ve reached the point of unarmored heads taking bullets without death means I’m done with this game. Really not sure what BSG are smoking to still call this game realistic

  10. You're the only tarkov content maker making videos of this type, so maybe you could test out whether the lower starting velocity from short barrel weapons affects the bullet statistics.
As in, the short barrel aks-74U has about -18% initial bullet velocity, would this also mean that a PP round fired from the aks-74u has an 18% damage/pen reduction from 44/36 -> 36/29?

Because if this is true, the aks-74u series should be avoided like the plague.

  11. I not quite agree with premise of "high pen rounds are always better than flesh rounds". There are other aspects like accuracy, recoil reduction, armour damage etc. So this statement kind of needs clarification – "if you are chad who runs and guns at close range without much aiming, then pen is key for you, because you need to get trough those armours", however if you are more balanced player who tries to be more situationally aware, don't get into fights you don't want to get into and choose when, how and from where you engage to minimise chances of dying and maximise chances of killing, then other types of ammo may be good as well. For example warmagedon are considered trash ammo, but it is probably the best for killing scav and not too bad for sniping in general, because of additional accuracy, So if you running something like DML, or moded-out ADAR, or even long barrel M4 on single shot they are devastating, 88 dmg + 90% fragmentation really drops anything quickly as long as you don't hit armour, but if you realise you playing against chad, then leg meta works very well on them. You can basically black out any limb in single shot and drop biggest chad with 3 shots at the leg. At the same time M856A1 and M855A1 are horrible rounds, because you just constantly missing everything due to -accuracy. Likewise M855 is basically identical to FMJ, there are no practical difference between them in game, but I prefer FMJ, because it has +accuracy and -recoil, whereas both are equally useless in armour penetration. On 545 side I had massive issue hitting anyone with BS and Igolniks, 7N40 seems like perfectly balanced round but finding it is nearly impossible. This leaves BP and PP as mostly usable rounds, BT is ok at close range. This leaves the rest of pairing in 556 favour, 556 has good accurate flesh round (warmagedon just better than SP or HP, which are neither accurate, nor fast, not does extreme damage), it has good early game and cheap round (FMJ is better than PS, and FMJ), it has equally unusable high tier rounds (+recoil -accuracy) with exception of maybe 7N40 which is great but simply impossible to get in any reasonable quantities. As such later in a game I simply move to either 7.62 BP, or 7.62 Nato M62, M61, even M80. Even 7.62 PS or BCP FMJ rips in comparison with both 556 and 545. What I am saying is that both 556 and 545 are more of low end round and 556 is better for lower end, neither is good in high-end anyway, but if 7N40 would be more widelly available then that would be the only balanced round.
For chads yes – in close range more pen equals better, but then I would say M855A1 is better than BS and M995 is better than Igolnik. BS and Igolnik simply lacks damage to drop somebody quickly and unless somebody runs class 6 armour and to be honest even if people do 556 drops them quicker. BS and Igolniks are probably more comparable to 556 SAP, which likewise just penetrates but has not damage and again 7N40 is just not really available. Add on top of that that M4 platform is just better than AK platform on stats overall and 556 wins this one quite easily.
Again if the premise is on pretending that all players are brainless gigachads, running and gunning aimlessly then I agree with commentary and conclusion, but if premise is that players are playing more realistically, engaging carefully and only when they consider to be in advantaged position (which is what person with brains would do), then pen becomes mostly irrelevant as well as armour, if you hit person in the chest then you have failed aiming. The only exception may be high tier helmets with faceshields and that could make it slightly more challenging.

  12. Im pretty sure your claim that you need 3 flashdrives FIR is not true. You only need 2 to access the quest lines from peacekeeper to access m856a1. You are the best technical tarkov yt out there right now. I on behalf of many other gamers sincerely thank you for your hard work!

  13. Nice. Gotta admit a lot of the stats went over my stoopid head 😆 but the early, mid and late-game breakdown make up a real good rule of thumb to live the wipe out by!

  15. The wiki is wrong about raider hp, they were buffed a long time ago and actually have 42 hp in the head, this means that 5.45 bs will not onetap them (unless you get lucky with a fragmentation) and m995 will only onetap them at closer ranges if you don't hit them in the helmet (not sure if condors will absorb 1 damage and save them too), so pls do not bring bs on labs unless you plan on dying to raiders and bring a mag of 55a1 if your running 5.56 to fight raiders, same applies to reserve but there are less raiders there so bs is fine as long as you bring a mag or two of lower end ammo like bt to fight raiders

  16. I try to scam on the flea for the little 30 packs of bp. I will craft a bunch of wires and over time people trade the bp packs for them. I am essentially getting sub 200 ruble bp ammo but it does take up a flea slot for a long time
