Sehr spannend! Danke dafür 🙏
Nice video thanks
Wouldn't you just love to just reach up and grab a handful o throttles on a 747? @ 14:06 "the Boss" those are mine! I'm wondering what the operational airspeed is when door is open? was bulkhead moved forward?
I can say that I had the privilege of working on the gem when it was in Waco Tx at Raytheon. I was a avionics technician there. So it excites me to see this beauty fly because a part of time is invested into this program!
Thank you for this video. Best information on SOFIA I've seen.
Thanks Air-Clips, you are the best !
Excellent video. I loved how you accurately mixed audio and video cuts from sources dating back to the flight test to accurately depict the mission sequence of your flight. You clearly understand flight operations. I loved the details how the camera panned when the aircraft was turning during taxi, the way you shot over the shoulder of the flight crew, and the accurate sound of the engines spooling up during takeoff, all correctly telling the story of the operation.
Note: the glass cockpit upgrade was not there when Sofia began science operations.
I have never seen the avionics bay access and the description of the door close sequence.
The interviews were very well done.
I was the structural design engineer for the upper rigid door and I left the program just as the drawings were being completed. I learned many details from this video I never heard before.
Note: The upper rigid door has 22 roller brackets on the front and 22 on the back. The front brackets have a flange that cannot fall out of the track. The back roller brackets have a truck assembly that cannot fall out of the track. So even if the roller axles crack there are 44 redundant safety constraints to keep the door on the aircraft.
It was such a pleasure to have you on board, Patrick! We absolutely loved your enthusiasm for both the plane and the science! Thank you for highlighting this special aircraft
Thanks for this very detailed and comprehensive video. I am an ex Flight Engineer on 747's. I miss that job every day!! I flew every version of 747 made, from -100's, -200's -300's, -400, -8, SP's and Freighter versions. This is an amazing aircraft and this wonderful video brought back a million good memories! Thanks for this very detailed and comprehensive video.
Cool!
Lovely to see Captain Elizabeth in command of this iconic aircraft. So interesting and superb as am massively in favor of women pilots (and with daughters) to see a Lady as Captain of a 747 – my father flew as a 747 Captain for CX, SQ, AF and Cargolux and amassed approx 25000 hours on all types (not just 74's). Sat with him on the jump seat during several extreme weather events into Kai Tak. My favorite aircraft although dad also loved the L1011 and 707 (which he also flew as a Captain on (and F/O with CX) and flew as a military pilot in the RAF. I flew in the RAFVR
Fantastic job by all!
Great video as always very educational information and great interviews to the general crew keep the good video right on
Good Memories! Spent lots of time on UAs SPs. Flew em NRT-JFK-NRT & SEA-HKG-SEA. Great looking cockpit upgrade! Cheers!
what an amazing video. top notch crew, scientists, technology, and of course, that gorgeous plane.
Awesome thanks for sharing would have an alert on flight radar for when this jet gets above 3k feet. Love going to see when you take off then waking up and you may or may not be in the air or on the way back. Was stationed at Edwards a year back and would like to see if I could hear you on my hand radio on Joshua APP. Also what chase aircraft was used F-18?
More videos of NASA please. Thank you
747SP & L-1011-500 are my fave wide bodies. Very kool upgraded avionics with EFIS & FMS. My dream ! Wish I could do jumpseat with this crew. I flew 747-200 jumpseats on many NWA Whales when I worked there.
16:58 traffic on 9 o'clock. Excellent up close and personal video!
It's amazing to see Scientific well electronic equipped never seen installed inside the aircraft, well operated flight by Hon'ble Captain pilot madam Elizabeth,so nice to see, thank u all those made this audio & video for scientific geniune world ! glad, thanx & regards to all
I noticed the “N” is “N747NA”, is that the original “N” number?
@0:22 would you look at that intimidating (to me) array of instruments panels!
Very nice and informative video really enjoyed watching it thank you.
I joyed the flight
Lol
Did the Air Force make you blur out the Northrop Grumman flight line?
They seem to have a curious upgrade to the instruments. The engine instrument cluster is kind of between the worlds, it's a TFT display but showing the mechanical gauge values. The same appears on flight engineer's station as well.
Wow!! By far one of your best specials! Well done.
In 1989 I made a TV documentary about the European Space Program with support from ESA. The SOFIA Documentary gave me the same enthusiasm as I had then in 1989, and it has been a joy to watch. Thank you from Oslo.
This is an aircraft I always track. One of the few remaining SP’s, thank you Patrick for the privilege of seeing both the awesome scope and the beautiful plane. Am so pleased this SP survived in such an important role. The SP is the highest performing 747 variant ever produced and I remember when my uncle flew on it 🙂 BTW, the engine tune on take-off, superb!
DLR needs to buyout NASA and keep it flying.
So thick and cute 747 version 🤣🤣 cebol
I have a friend that is the Flight Safety Equipment Engineer for that aircraft. He has been on some interesting flights around the world. He and I were Flight Dispatchers at MDC before the merger with Boeing.
Flight Engineer has the most bad ass voice. And the German Female Captain is just a hero as she has to fly it by hand!
