I’m so happy to be back in Taiwan, one of my favorite nations in the world! I was invited here by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau to cover parts of the island that I never knew existed, which led me down to the countryside to visit a few indigenous tribes. Did you know that the indigenous Taiwanese were the original settlers of the Philippines and many other Pacific Islands? I was fascinated to learn about this!

Along the 4 day journey around Taiwan with Deanna, I found it fascinating to see the difference between rural life and city life, which became the concept of this story. We went to Taiwan’s second-biggest city called Kaohsiung to uncover the differences between Taiwan’s rural areas and its bustling cities. I was mesmerized by the amazing temples and delicious food! Finally, we made our way to Taipei where I take you on a journey to understand the wacky (yet fun) culture and experience a night market – one of the singular best things about Taiwan.

This is my Taiwan story, go create yours: https://www.mytaiwanstory.com/

P.S. – There are a few minor corrections to the video that I want to make – thank you to those who helped fact-check!

1) At 1:40: Taiwan was under Japanese colonial rule from 1895 and left in 1945 at the end of World War II.
2) At 1:35: I misspoke – The Spanish and Dutch colonies were actually in the 17th century.

Thank you for watching and I’ll see you next week!

  2. Ya that is not the history of Taiwan at all. After ww2 it was handed back to the republic of china and then after the Chinese civil war the government fled to the island and they still go by the republic of china.

  3. My favorite place in the world. I studied in Kaohsiung for 2 months last summer, and traveled the entire island. I just received a job offer in Taichung beginning in August. Knowing I’m about to live jn Taiwan feels like a dream. It’s the most beautiful place full of the most amazing people.

  4. @22:06 On the topic of Taiwan's bullet trains: "It is literally like what you see in Japan." Um… That is because they are literally from Japan. The bullet trains were built by Japanese companies like Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Hitachi, and Toshiba.

  5. The aborigines on the island are spread all over the island, not just the east and south, and not just the 16 ethnic groups.

The Dutch and Spaniards did not come for gold, but to have a stronghold to trade with China and Japan.

  7. Kaohsiung surprised me very much when I was there in 2016. Didn't know about the city before, but a friend of mine was studying chinese there, so I went to visit. I spent almost a week there and never ran out of things to do. Highly recommend!
