Rust has a way of sneaking up on steel.
For example, check out these lathe tools. The last time I used them, they were spotless…and now look at them.
What if you could erase rust as easily as a pencil mark on paper and then go back to work with it protected?
Check out these Cratex abrasive blocks. They’re made for model train tracks…but I thought I’d give them a try for little rust spots…and they’re amazing. They’re hard rubber blocks that are mixed with silicon carbide.
They’ll erase rust from steel like a pencil erasing a mark on a page…without scratching the metal.
Now, you might be thinking, “Why not just tear off a piece of fine grit sandpaper?” Well, unlike sandpaper you’re not losing grit as you go—each time you rub you’re revealing a new layer.
These blocks aren’t meant for heavy rust removal, but for smaller tools or steel that’s just starting to rust, they’re perfect.
Once the rust is gone, a quick rub with paste wax will keep your tools protected and ready to go—like the rust was never there.
*Note: This method removes rust but does not remove pits or damage caused by it. You may notice that my chisels still show some marks when I added paste wax—that’s due to existing pitting damage. If, like me, you’re not always diligent about maintaining your steel before rust develops, pitting can occur. This is why it’s essential to use a method like this to prevent rust and avoid pitting in the first place.*

Personally I wipe linseed oil on my chisels and chipbreaker, when it cures, the coating that's created is kinda nice
Evapo-Rust
Cratex rubberized abrasives are some of the best I've tried
VCI (volatile corrosion inhibitor) might help (but i think a thin coat of protective oil is best)
I've heard Camphor blocks are good to put inside tool chests/drawers. They evaporate over time and coat the tools with an oil that helps prevent rust while being in storage.
I wonder how well it would work on blueing…?
