  1. I totally agree, Dead Alive (or Brain Dead here in the UK) is an absolute masterpiece, I was lucky enough to see this when it came out in the 90s and it's one I often go back to. Interesting to note that the special effects in Peter Jackson's early movies were also done by WΔ“tā Workshop, which went onto create the amazing effects you see in Lord of the Rings.

  2. So, to be "that guy", Lionel's mother gets bitten by a (Sumatran) Rat Monkey. Not a Monkey Rat.
I don't know why, but in my head they are very different creatures…

And despite me being from England, "Dead Alive" is the better title, because the zombies in this film are many things, but braindead is not one of them!

  3. I was a junior in HS when i first saw Dead Alive, a friend of mine introduced me to this and Sgt Kabukiman the same year. I've never been the same since. That was in like 1996, and that friend died just last year. If he comes back, I'll be waiting with my lawnmower.

  4. I really hope Dead-Alive is on streaming for others to see. I own the DVD and in the U.S, it's become extremely rare. Also the dinner scene makes me wonder, how would the MPAA react to horror film that only has pus but absolutely no blood or gore?

  5. My question is what the hell exactly do they inject corpses in the basement?
Couldn't be more right if it were from that Nazi doctor?
That doctor deserves more attention, in the film and this videoπŸ˜…πŸ˜‚

  6. I always thought Paladin McGruder looked kinda like Jack Deth, so I made this trib vid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93LFiCZlXmk
Pardon the aspect ratio, but I made this 12+ years ago-go, back when I was still using a ye olde CRT monitor.

Also made one for Lionel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EV7t8xxvXI

1:29 Roger Ebert coined the term "splatstick" when describing Evil Dead 2. Btw, Peter Jackson, Guillermo del Toro, and Quentin Tarantino all drew inspirado from Sam Raimi.

    1:51 (mother)

    1:54 (rat monkey)

2:28 More likely Taekwondo. Kung Fu, regardless of style, is defined by circular motions. Taekwondo (which literally means "foot fist way") is like suped-up Karate with an emphasis on footwork and legwork. Notice how Paladin McGruder's fighting style focuses on kicks and hard impact moves. For comparison, a "soft" style (like Judo or Jukido) focuses on takedowns.

    3:06 (custard)

  7. I can't think of any movie scene that's made me anywhere near as nauseous as the custard scene or the ratmonkey stomping scene. Just the grossest, I love it!

  8. I first knew about this movie in Gorezone magazine and was dying to see it. And when I got the unrated VHS it did not let me down and it's the goriest movie ever. I don't remember well but I think there was a movie out called Brain Dead and to avoid the confusion in U.S. they retitled it. Good review and cool video bro!πŸ‘‰πŸ˜ƒπŸ‘ˆ
    Happy Friday The 13th!πŸ‘
