This tutorial shares my favorite approach to value studies that has helped to level up my painting skills. When I was starting off in my art journey, I felt like I was wasting a lot of time mindlessly doing studies of old masters without really understanding what I was looking out for and it t took me many years of frustration and experimentation to develop a study method that worked for me. I’m hoping it will for you as well!
This video is beginner friendly, so even if you have never done value studies before, or are looking to refresh your fundamentals of values and lighting, this video is for you! You’ll be learning things such as how to break down a scene, setting up lighting and how to avoid muddy values in your paintings.

It had been totally lost on me that 3-value paintings can be used as the bones of a painting and establish exposure. I just recently had the realization after seeing the process broke down even further, creating black/white studies only and then choosing which side to put an additional value on. Seeing it work and create functional compositions near instantly was mindblowing.
I realized while I understood value grouping, I didn’t understand setting up said values so they work from the get-go.
Don’t know how it’s taken this long, but I’ve needed to hear it, so thanks again
