I'm not into this non-duality much 🙂 But what if "awakening" is de-program really…Deprogramming, total and on all levels? In this sense, we are really "computer program". Great video Matt, the thing about the mist is good one, I guess. <3
Why am I facing all the conditionings and processing them for years, but no awakening? I know what my true self is but do not feel I am that as my primary experience. F knows what stage I’m in but I’m doing all the work but from a person 🤷🏻♀️ It’s like when emotional triggers arise, I am great at riding them out and they lose their grip. But in everyday life where there are no strong triggers, I’m in the mind, listening to it’s chatter. I am unable to stick to practises so gave that idea up ages ago. This just sucks!
Very helpful! thanks
Thanks Matt.
But if there is no self then who or what would be doing these practices that were suggested?
Seems like way too much work and way too boring and depressing to even attempt. How is it worth the effort, just to realize that you dont exist and that everything is meaningless and an illusion? Its a good thing that the universe is uncreated. Only an idiot would create such a farce.
Do you believe we should become enlightened and stay that way? Or should meditation be used to break down the ego, and then build up a new one?
I also have a question regarding morals. Do you follow a moral code/law or do you know what is right to do automatically when enlightened?
Hey Matt, Love this video!
There's little seeking energy here but theres stickiness to certain stories that are connected to very strong repressed sensation. But theres also not so much care about it, alot of the inquiry (like sense gates n stuff) is just happening. But there seems to be a waiting for something to happen… especially in my visual field.. feel kinda up in the air but also detached…
Is it a fitting time if shadow-work and inquiry happen?
– Sam
Good to hear you say these things (as an antidote to all the 'you're perfect as you are' things non duality speakers often drop into conversations).
Matt, in what ways has your life changed after enlightenment? Less fear or anxiety?
Great video Matt. There's a huge misconception that awakening to no self means no more problems. I even see some "Teachers" and speakers talk about this. For me to say the Ego has completely fallen away and doesn't react anymore is in itself an Ego Trip. Conditioning still arises. Emotions still arise. I love your Surrender approach with no agenda. Just letting it be without judgement. Beautiful.
I thought I was well on my way after a few years of intense inquiry, then everything fell to shit with my job and I couldn't handle it. The self was still seen as real and operating in some situations. It led me to re-investigate this self only to become absolutely sure it's not there. Now there's been a giving up, out of exhaustion which is strangely more peaceful. Things are still going wrong left and right but it's like there's nobody left to resist. Who knows what is next. Maybe it will be this way forever, maybe something will trigger the sense of self again.
Awakening to what from what for what ???
When this started happening to me i was scared as fuck
Human brain is amazing, a mother after delivery of a child (esp. first) gets a HUGE flood of dopamine, and the mind does not easily map the actual pain of delivery. Could "awakening after suffering" be hormonal chemical reaction to repeated emotional assaults? Please consider interviewing a Neurologist in a future vlog. Great work, keep it up!
Thank you for this. I have always wondered. It is difficult yet I want to learn this, but it is like a light that just flickers. Now with some context I can gasp some of the ideas of awaking. Please do more in the arrangements for one whom seeks a direction into, and out of the bonds of so many distractions. Found your web site. Very helpful.
“My Father, I surrender my will to Thee”
It seems like there’s nothing I can do, so I just let the process take care of itself? Does this question even make sense?
Thanks for the reminder to 'listen' Matt! 😊
Just as a concert pianist or chess grandmaster continues to practice, I encourage continued meditation after Awakening.
Thank you for this video! I find it extremely fortunate that I stumbled onto your page today. Because it addressed the problems I’ve had through integration after awakening.
Particularly, the part about how intellectually, awakening may be easy to understand, but the body needs time to recondition to new programming. I’ve had trouble with this and recurring doubts am I truly awakened or not. After this video, I understand this recondition is apart of the natural unfolding as you said, and there’s nothing to worry about.
Thanks again, excited to be a new subscriber!
What u mean by awakening
Thank you Matt you speak very clearly and your videos are very helpful. I found it specially helpful when you talk and explain how is it to see no boundaries
"There are three stages of enlightenment.
The first is when the first glimpse happens. I call it mini-satori. When, for the first time, for a single moment mind is not functioning, there is a gap – no thought between you and existence. You and existence, you and existence… for a moment… and the meeting, and the merging, and the communion, and the orgasm… but for a moment. And from that moment the seed will be in your heart and growing.
The second I call satori: that is when you have become capable of retaining this gap as long as you want. For hours together, for days together you can remain in this interval, in this utter aloneness, in God, with God, as God. But a little effort is still needed on your part. If you drop the effort the satori disappears. The first satori, the mini-satori, happened almost as an accident – you were not even expecting it. How can you expect? You had not known it before, you had never tasted it. How can you expect it? It came just out of the blue. Yes, you were doing many things – praying, meditating, dancing, singing – but they were all like groping in the dark. You were groping.
It will not happen if you are not groping at all. It happens only to ‘gropers’, real gropers – they go on groping, they never feel tired and exhausted, and they never feel hopeless. Millions of times they are defeated in their effort, and nothing happens, but they go on and on. Their passion for God is so tremendous. They can accept all kinds of defeats and frustrations, but their search continues. Unwavering, they go on groping. The darkness is great, it seems to be almost endless, but their hope is greater than the darkness. That is the meaning of faith; they grope through faith.
Faith means hoping for that which seems almost impossible. Faith means hoping against all hope. Faith means trying to see that which you have not seen, and you cannot even be certain whether it exists or not. A great passion is needed to have that much faith.
So to a groper who lives in faith and goes on and on, nothing ever prevents him. No failure ever settles in him; his journey continues. He is the pilgrim. Then one day it comes just out of the blue. You were not expecting. Unawares, it comes close to you and surrounds you. For a moment you cannot even believe… How can you believe? – for millions of lives a person has been groping, and it has not happened. The first time it looks almost like imagination, dream. But it is there, and it is so real that all that you have known before as real pales before it, becomes very faint. It is so real that it carries its certainty intrinsically. It is self-evident. You cannot suspect it. That is the criterion of whether the mini-satori has happened or not: you cannot doubt it. You can try, but you cannot doubt it. It is so certain that no doubt arises in that moment. It is simply there.
It is like the sun has risen… how can you doubt?
Then the second becomes a more conscious groping. Now you know it is, now you know it has happened. Now you know it has even happened to you! Now there is a great certainty. Now faith is not needed, now experience is enough. Now belief is not needed. Now its certainty permeates your whole being, you are full of it. Now you grope more consciously, you make efforts in the right direction. Now you know how it happened, when it happened, in what space it became possible. You were dancing? – then what was happening when it happened? In what way did the contact become possible? By and by, it happens again and again, and you can make out, figure out, reckon out how it happens, in what mood. In what mood do you fall in tune with it and it happens? Now things become more clear, now it is not just waiting in the darkness. You can start moving, you can have a direction.
Still you falter, still sometimes you fall, still sometimes it disappears for months. But never again can doubt arise in you. The doubt has been killed by the first satori. Then, more and more, it will come. And sooner or later you will become capable of bringing it on order. Whenever you want you can create that milieu in you which brings it. You can relax, if it comes in relaxation; you can dance, if it comes in dance. You can go under the sky if it comes there. You can watch a rose flower if it happens there. You can go and float in a river if it happens there.
That’s how all the methods have been discovered. They have been discovered by people when they found out that in a certain situation – make certain arrangements – it happens. Those became methods. By and by you become very very certain that if you desire it, any moment you will be able, because you can move your focus towards it. You can move your whole consciousness, you can direct your being.
Now you become able to see that it is always there; just your contact is needed. It is almost like your radio or like your TV: it is always there, sounds are always passing; you just have to tune the radio to a certain station – and the song, and the news. This is the second stage. But still, effort is needed to tune. You are not continuously tuned on your own, you have to work it out. Some days it is easy, some days it is hard. If you are in a negative mood it is hard, if you are angry, it is hard. If you are loving it is easier. In the early morning it is easier, in the evening it is more difficult. Alone on a mountain it is easier, in the market-place it is more difficult. So you start coming closer and closer, but still effort is needed.
Then the third thing happens. When you become so capable of finding it that any moment, whenever you want it – not a single moment is lost – you immediately can pinpoint it, then the third thing happens. It becomes a natural quality. That I call samadhi."
Stunning. Practical and insightfull. Just what i needed to hear to put things back into perspective and help the transition. Thank you very muuch. Blessings to you.
I love, love, love the insight that awakening is a kind of radical bypass. Yup. And that's ok, as long as it's not made to be the "right" way and all representative self-narrative treated as invalid, instead of the attachment to it treated as confining and stifling. When awakened nature is treated as the only real nature, this leads to spiritual bypass as emotion itself is a kind of illusion built from body sensation channeled by thought, but it is the stuff of the inner life, love, and relationship. Where as realness has no inside or outside, its manifest character and distinct parts do, which is the life of life. Pure realness has no flavor, no experience, no significance or insignificance. It's the Higg's Boson of subjectivity giving everything its mass or substance, contributing nothing to its form. Life without substance is a dream, but waking up doesn't change the superficial qualities of the dream, it clarifies what has substance and what does not, so we lead a life that feels fully real, and we stop chasing shadows into the dark. It transforms the dream not by changing sensations, but by changing our base of relationship to them from one of manipulation from a magical point of influence which is ego, to a participating flow that is also the nature of it all. It goes from "I" acting upon the world, to human nature as nature being what it is.
The hypnotic spell that happens when we ground reality into our ability to influence it from abstraction becomes a web that ensnares all sense of what is, to know this ocean and be free of it is to jump out of it in awakening, to jump out of mind, but to live fully as humans is to dive back in as we're not birds. So temporary bypassing is useful and needed, but not sufficient for human life. In a sense we're actually jumping back into the ocean from the air in awakening, by living in mind we're pretending we're birds and wonder why things seem so hard, but we're actually flying fish who got stranded from jumping onto the boat of civilization and problem solving, surviving only by finding puddles to breathe. Reality (ocean) is our natural environment, simulated reality or mind (air) is just an awesome additional way to escape predators (in the flying fish analogy).
Unconsciousness is being a bird, initial awakening is realizing we're a fish, Enlightenment is realizing we're a flying fish and embodying that by dispelling all the lessons learned on the boat as misleading, and letting our true nature now situated in its corrected sense of circumstance swim and fly as is natural.
