Tom, I am surprised that nobody, apart from you, mentioned that EVs requires very little servicing, therefore the $3100 cannot be justified. Its different for ICE cars where they actually change oil, replace filters etc, but for EVs there isnt much to do so they are making owners pay solely to maintain their warranty, blackmail strategy.
A friend of mine owns a Tesla S. He also used to own a high end car maintenance workshop so he knows about servicing. He said after 3 years of driving his car the only thing he changed were tyres. So there. I wpould like to see BYD China control this situation.
Definitely more details needed.
The comparison comment to China servicing costs (all under A$100 was telling – obviously mechanic labor cost is lower).
On Tesla pricing, would be good if Riz could add a summary of auctions (particularly Pickles) – reportedly been quite a few Teslas getting sold that way (query if this is the Tesla trade-ins ?)
Rahuls audio is much better now, thanks for the change 🙂
'Tesla does not have a servicing schedule'. And hence, is by far and away the most popular EV seller in the market by a country mile, given that they have that much confidence in the cars they make to warranty them without a schedule.
Unfortunately we have no options or real alternatives in choice in inexpensive EV’s available .The problem is not BYD China it is the Agent & service provider 😖
Trying to charge service costs for a car that doesn’t need any servicing… what the…
6:14 Luke Todd says, "The servicing works out to be about $350 per year, which is a very reasonable rate" – total LIE!
$3100/6 = over $500/year!
Seriously is he going to insult our intelligence with blatant obvious lies to our face!?
NOT IMPRESSED!
Why is there a KM value added to the Screen warranty… This doesn't make sense .
It is no surprise that there is over-servicing of vehicles by the auto industry. This is their bread and butter money earner. Customers are told they need genuine replacement parts when servicing a particular car brand. Often, this is to get the customers to spend more money. Dealerships are notorious for this behaviour.
Electric cars are known to need less servicing over the life of the vehicle. Eg:Teslas. This is a scam and should be investigated by the government.
It can be argued that if the screen stops working after the warranty period and in the case of tesla especially the car is dead weight. In conventional cars you can still drive your car and change other functions if the screne stops working. I think this can be challenged under ACL.
With this new information for service schedule. I'll be surprise if they find something is wrong during servicing ie: Oh you have a problem with your left hand suspension
It’s too expensive. Even if an ICE car it’s to expensive. I got my car fully serviced at MyCar and was $199. This for a car pushing 300ks on the clock.
The real issue is that in China there are no cost to service the BYD car. Ev's really do not need any servicing! Period. This is a money grab!
My kona cost $165 per service for the fist 5 years. This is Rubbish from BYD!!!! 🙁
I don't understamd why folks are considering cancelling their Atto 3 order for roughly $1,500 perceived overcharging for servicing over eight years. As is mentioned in the vid, the waiting list for other EVs is very long, and most models are much more expensive. Also, as mentioned in the vid, the price of fuel will be increasing thereby further eating into any perceived saving by cancelling your order.
In my view, the extra, possibly unwarreted, servicing costs are not going to stop me purchasing a BYD Atto 3 Extended Range. I put to you, if it was priced $1,500 higher but the service costs were halved, most of us who placed an order wouldn't be to bothered. It seems incongruous to me that $1,500 of service costs would be a deal breaker in a car that has no tailpipe emissions, is cheaper to run, especially if one has PVs on the roof, as is so well priced and specced. 🙂
Survey for non-livestream viewers, MAY be purchasing an Atto 3 depending as my current EV lease isn't over for another 1-2yrs yet. Will do test drives and total checkout of the car before making any decision. The service schedule doesn't matter to me the warranty have to see and compare to other EV's I'm interested in. Tom you need to watch James from James & Kate on YouTube, he's an EV mechanic independent services all EV's including Tesla and yes there is much more than you say to service on a Tesla. People are getting hung up comparing everything to Tesla all the time, not sure Tesla is doing it right anyway. Plus there is disgruntled owners of Tesla's as well and some places they only offer a Ranger service. Maybe just wait and see and the value for money on the car far outweighs the servicing cost as you haven't mentioned about towing/roof box capabilities as yet either, hopefully before end of the podcast.
At TomLF – I cannot understand why you spent so much time defending the servicing costs? And why keep comparing the BYD to ICE vehicles – you should be comparing with similar EVs such as the MG ZSEV or Kona.
The warranty for the car and the battery is very disappointing. EV is supposed to save on servicing costs, their servicing costs are not acceptable.
I'm more worried about the warranty not being "bumper to bumper" so to speak, If I'm leasing the vehicle for 5 years it would be nice if everything on the vehicle (bar consumables like tyres and brake pads etc) was covered by the warranty for at least this long if not longer!
I'm surprised EV Direct didn't more closely align to the MG ZS EV service costs/ schedule. As an MG owner I think MG's are higher than should be but acceptable. The BYD numbers seem a bit rich.

It's interesting, I think personally that prices are high. If you consider a brake and suspension check from Pedders @ $28.00 it seems rather high. We are in new territory and I think that people are anxious about moving to a new brand. My thoughts are a $150-$190 annual service is fair and annual service is required to ensure your not driving something that is dangerous and that could be any car.
Works out at $350 a year….
I bought a Yaris Cross Hybrid a year ago. Service is fixed at $215 per year for 5 years.
The Atto deal is a turn off for me.
Based on the prices given in this video, the cost per year for the MG ZG is $335 per 20000 km, compared to BYD ATTO 3 of $350 per 20000 km. MG price is 268 * 7 +807 for services / 8 = $335.38. So $15 difference.
Is it legal for BYD or its dealers to force BYD owners to use their maintenance providers?
Meanwhile my junk old car is costing oil and filter changes every 5000 kms and all fluids every two years. Plus two hours in the shed every six months.
The depreciation alone in a new car is more than this
The BYD "service" cost is ridiculous.
I feel like owners maybe lining the pockets of My Car labour expenses …? It should be 7 years bumper to bumper including screen !! Could you imagine the screen failing at 38 months and explaining to My Car it’s part of the warranty and they say it’s multimedia ? Mmmm Should cover everything but wear and tear items … like other legacy auto makers I guess
Great video Tom
We need to keep Australians employed. If MyCar and Egars invest in electric car serving infrastructure it can only be a good thing for the future. Yes it's annoying when something rises in price. Alternatively BYD raises the price of the car. either way you need to pay for professionals. I'm sure every person working in Australia has been told their products/services are too expensive. The car is still well priced. After all this waffle the main question is Would you buy the ATTO 3 if it was $3500 more expensive knowing there would be no serving (excluding brakes and the normal wear and tear products)?
I think we are all missing the point. The only reason EVD & BYD would reduce the warranty is they have little faith in the quality and longevity of the parts in the vehicles which means the customer pays for the inferior quality of the vehicle
The cheapest extra shitty aftermarket battery has a better battery warranty than the genuine part?
CANNOT BELIEVE BYD IS RIPPING OFF THERE CUSTOMERS FORCING THEM TO TAKE SERVICING SCHEDULE AND THERE SERVICING GARAGES MAKING LOADS FROM THESE. IF BYD HAD THERE OWN NETWORK THIS WOULD MAKE THINGS BETTER. I LOVE BYD BUT I WOULD NOT ACCEPT THIS , ITS PIRATING AT ITS BEST , NEW COMPANY OLD TRICKS
I was convinced that this was going to be my first EV and that I would purchase this year. The warranty really worries me, as it seems that rather than build a car to a standard and quality, BYD has grabbed bits from wherever they could find them and then set the warranties to suit. Even a battery from RACV installed on the side of eh road has a 3 year warranty! My Camry Hybrid has a 12 year old battery in it….On servicing $190 is the cost of some paperwork and an inspection on a hoist (maybe with a torch). For $600 on an EV, lets just say it better be spotless when I get it back as that is a person for a whole day. I'll be waiting now as BYD seems to have little faith in their product.
Tesla still has Copland and oil and filter on there motors saying it’s for life is crap nothing is for life as a sealed unit and then after 8 years you will need a new bsttery duck up that cost, we are just being conned 😂
cancellations is the only way to wake them up blackmail isn't a good start for this new entry
The warranty is a joke, it's should be same as Nz, bumper to bumper 6 year warranty, and 8 years for the power train and battery, 3 years this 2 years that what a joke , I told my brother he should cancel his order and wait for the mg4 at least mg has a proper warranty.
Hey guys wanting to see one of these cars in the flesh. Live in Brisbane, any suggestions on where I might do that
