This week on Regular Car Reviews, we review the 2001 Saab 9-3 Viggen! This is one of the final cars from one of the most iconic car brands to ever die, Sweden’s own Saab. But does the Viggen live up to the Saab standard? Or did General Motors prevent Saab from making a true performance car? Why was the GM-Saab partnership so controversial? We’ll take the Saab 9-3 Viggen out for a drive, and answer all these questions, plus a whole lot more on today’s episode of RCR!

  1. Well. Friend of mine chose this over a BMW when it came out. Drove it so hard the front suspension shook loose. He was like "It's a sports car. It should be able to take that" every time he got it fixed.

  2. You've got to be careful though, Saab Viggen is habit-forming. It's a gateway drug and soon you'll want Saab 900, Saab 900 SPG Saab 9000, Saab 9000 Aero Saab 9-5, Saab TurboX, Saab 9-5 Aero wagon… You'll think one will be enough and I can control myself… it's just one Viggen and then BAM! Your hooked! I thought I had it under control and now I Have 2 9-5 aero wagons and am going for a third!

  3. I was a Saab salesman for less than a year back in 2000 when this car was new. I loved taking it out of the lot for a drive when the showroom was quiet. Man did it pull! You had to keep both hands firmly on the steering wheel, the torque steer was crazy. I now drive a 2004 9-5 with the same 2.3T engine, it's perfectly suited for the larger 9-5, although not as fast as in the 9-3 Viggen.

  4. my first car was an AT 2005 9-3 2.0t. Traded it in for my second which is an AT 2010 9-3 2.0T. Now in January this year I bought a 5-spd MT 2006 9-3 2.0T to have as well lmao. I'd take a SAAB over any other car all day long. People go "oeugh eww why would you drive a SAAB, and whyyyy woyld you get a second one??" and I go, "in the 11 years I've been driving, never once has my SAAB left me on the side of the road or stranded. Can you say that about any of your cars?" And I just get silence lmao.

  6. He's not wrong at all about the turbo. I had an 2000 9⁡ aero wagon and absolutely loved that thing to death it's one of the only cars I truly miss. The turbo lag was hardcore tho but once you got halfway thru the powerband and like upper 2nd – 4th gear that mf pulled hard. Best highway cruiser imo. Wasn't the best off the like tho

  7. A little about a lot of things..

Didn't get to watch this over coffee this morning as the daughter made it to State Speech contest and I had to leave early to go watch. She medaled!
As God as my witness, I had never heard of this car.
RCR is Must See TV for the 20's
I come from a GM family. I had family that owned GM dealerships. I own GM cars. GM pisses me off so much. Mr. Regular is right, the bad Karma that Roger Smith and Company sowed in the 80's still haunts GM, with good reason. GM deserves it.
The commercial was awsome, rewound it 3 times.

    Cheers.
