  1. my guess for how the procedural generation will work based on Todd howards interview on IGN.

they created a bunch of terrain tile sets for different biomes. the procedural system takes a set of tiles from 2-3 maybe 4 biomes. and stitches it together over a sphere.

meaning that if you visit the same planet on 2 different saves, it wont look the same, because the tiles have been procedurally laid out. so they are unlikely to be the same 2 times in a row, but i think you will still get the same biomes. so you'll be in a pine forest both times. the pine forest will just not have the exact same tree in the exact same location.

the explorable locations, are probably also done in sets. you could for instance have a set of 10 robotic facilities. all of them different sizes and layouts. but only ever use 5 of them in every save. then have them spawned in randomly on tiles that have been set up to receive explorable locations.

if you would go with this approach for lets say the same amount of locations in fallout 4, making 5-10 variations of each location. then you could end up with a quite convincing galaxy even with 1000 explorable planets. (also understanding that moons are probably included in that 1000 number)

  2. In terms of backgrounds having their skills shuffled it is because the skill trees themselves have had some shuffling. You can only start with Tier 1 skills. In the Direct build of the game you needed to invest 2 skill points into a tree to unlock Tier 2, then 4 more(a total of 6) to unlock Tier 3. Presumably Tier 4 would require 6 more points(a total of 12).

  3. I loved the direct but I wish they showed more environmental exploration. I am still having a hard time imagining fully open planets with interesting landscapes, vistas, procedurally generates creatures that don't all look the same, interesting location or random NPCs interesting with the environment.

  4. When you approach a planet the landmass is the same as it will be for your friends. The points of interest however will not all be the same.

  5. I wouldn't call lower quality npc skins 'an improvement' and we all know Bethesda can't do npc eyes, they've gone from dull and squinty to overly glowy. However, other graphical changes to the enviroment are way better than what was presented in the early trailer, and the lighting is fantastic. Eventually they'll be a mod for everything so no complaints, but overall Starfields quality is damn impressive.

  6. It makes sense why would you take the armor if it’s filled with bullets or destroyed in some manner I think it’s more immersive plus people forget this is a bsg game we can always make a mod to change things we may not like.

  7. every game they bring out is hyped up. every one i can can remember has been a mess. remember fallout 76 and how awesome it was going to be? how polished and great they said it was…… yeh, you are all falling for it again. and you will with the next elder scrolls.

  8. Just noticed when you were talking about the legendary gear that the helmet the character picked up had a list of bonuses tied to skills, like "Technician: -15% damage from robot enemies". So it looks like skills will not only determine what you can do and how effective you are at it, but also what bonuses you get from equipment. I don't think i've seen an RPG where you can use your skills to squeeze more out of your gear like this. Pretty cool.
As for planets being different for different players, there's a section in the showcase where they show a planet that has 2 markers on it, showing outpost that you can travel to. But then the player selects a random spot on the planet surface and gets a "land" option. I'm guessing if you land on a random part of the planet, the place will be procedurally generated, but then the system will add hand crafted "random encounter" type content to the area, that will be different every time.

  9. pretty much a copy of the Dantics and IGN rehash of "secrets" that is not a secret and just a rehash of the actual starfield direct. A sad ploy for ad revenue and views.

  10. From the presentation it’s clear the red health bars are extra health bars added on to buffed characters. Since the character is at a certain level it has a max health of a certain number, but when buffed, the stronger enemies have extra health.

  11. I doubt its totally random, its probable either random or system-based in terms of them dropping their own armor. totally random would make no sense given some factions have specific armor.
