2 Tips For Seeing Tracks & Trails + How To Interpret That Animal’s Story

This video shows two methods to help you see animal tracks more clearly in leaf debris and sandy substrate. Here we’re using the example of deer tracks, but the same basic principles can apply to all types of tracks.

We’ll also explore some ideas around interpreting the stories of different trails you find outside by exploring and testing theories.

  1. Cool info. I like that you pointed out the trail going up the hill. I would have noticed the darker spot and seen a trail, but wouldn't probably have thought…oh that could be a deer trail. i'll have to keep my eyes open! Also, love to hear about the Bushmen, they are so amazing.

  2. How do you get the height of a animal and weight? I have noticed with deer, where ever there is a obstacle in the path to negotiate, they will leave a scat pile, knowing they drop a pile while standing still, I have deduced they are waiting for their companion to negotiate the obstacle.
I can often pick up a trail because there is a obstacle and a scat pile, if there is no scat especially after several obstacles I know I'm off track or this isn't a deer trail.
