#2 Greek Heroes, Heroines, and Epic Journeys: Super-Humans on a Quest | The Hero’s Journey in Ancieng Greek Mythology | Mythical Podcast | In the previous episode, you heard how the Greeks believed our universe, their gods and goddesses, and humans were created. You also learned that humans were punished for their curiosity, thanks to Pandora, and, thanks to Prometheus, for their advantage towards other animals to become creators themselves with the help of fire.
What followed this “Golden Age” were the “Silver” and “Bronze” Age. And later, the most epic of them all: the “Heroic Age”. Although heroes were often born possessing incredible qualities, they had to work hard towards earning this title. They had to use both their mind and body to help others, to fight monsters and inner demons, and most importantly, to discover themselves and the true purpose of life.
Greek heroes and heroines inspired the hero archetype in psychology and the so-called hero’s-journey in comparative mythology and narratology. These myths were analyzed by Carl Jung, Joseph Cambell and other academics who were intrigued by the many stories of heroes in all mythologies.
The hero’s journey begins with a call for an adventure. The hero finds many obstacles and temptations, receives punishment or aid from gods, and even goes into the world of the dead, where he is reborn – he then returns home completely transformed.
Ancient Greek stories that narrated such heroic journeys were often called epics or epic poems. They were lengthy narratives about the extraordinary lives of heroes and, in the beginning, they were all memorized and spread by word of mouth. That is because they originated before the invention of writing but survived through the writings of ancient authors.
In this episode, you will hear the summary of Homer’s epic named the “Odyssey”. The episode also includes the adventurous Argonautica. But before we get started, let’s see some of the mightiest Greek heroes and heroines, including some that won’t be included in these stories.
