1st Airborne Reconnaisance Squadron in Oosterbeek, September 17th, 1944

This extraordinary footage, filmed by the Ph. J. Clous Family, Dentist in Oosterbeek, offers a rare look at British troops advancing towards Arnhem during the historic Operation Market Garden. Although living at the Lebretweg 1 this movie is captured in and around the family’s home near the Utrechtseweg, the video shows the 1st Airborne Reconnaissance Squadron moving towards their objective—the Arnhem Road Bridge—as part of a coup de main assault.

British soldiers can be seen traveling in jeeps and on motorcycles, with their jeeps modified for speed and firepower, featuring Vickers K machine guns. Among the column is a jeep towing a trailer with a 2 cm Polsten anti-aircraft gun, providing additional support to the squadron.

Towards the end of the footage, the squadron pauses, likely during a German ambush at the front of the column. This rare film offers a valuable glimpse into the critical moments of Operation Market Garden and the British advance through Oosterbeek.
