A total of 15 cryptids have been spotted one way or another throughout the entire Fallout Universe. In fact, at least one cryptid has made an appearance in each canon Fallout title. Today, I will go over each cryptid’s in-game lore, real world origins, and their more recent depiction and legacy.

Just a thing tho, wasn't the aliens canonized in fo2? Since skynet mentions being made from alien tech
My first wendigo was a scorched one in a vault. I screamed my head off and nearly sh!t my pants. It was terrifying.
well researched and interesting. good vid
seeing how uppity native americans are about their culture and how instead of embracing others or informing the interested they choose to gatekeep makes me not care about their plight
I like the wendigo and skinwalker, I like seeing the chupacabra and la illirona depicted in non-hispanic works and like to inform others about their origins
if youre not going to spread it yourself you have no say when someone else does it for you one way or another, "appropriation" is just a buzzword for knowledge gatekeeping
Sorry for all the hate your getting by all the people that want ignore the wendigos history especially considering
It’s by white people who have never actually done research on cryptids. Seriously a good video dude the cryptids always need some love
What about the giant bird that was skewered to the cliff sides like that could have been a Thunderbird that's a Cryptid
"Unalived herself" LMAO
Pretty sure the "Jackalope" is based on the German "Wolpertinger"
My family being from Douglas Wyoming, I love that the jackalope was included, no matter how small a part
You don’t see people upset over the snallygaster being misrepresented as an eyeball mutant. But just because the wendigo is tied to native Americans it’s problematic to represent it in media at all?
16:37
27:46 Dusk is good though
28:00 pwobwematic
I don't really like what they did with the snallygaster and the Wendigo they look nothing like the way they are described in folklore
you forgot the legendary keystalope
37:51 in other words: "no you're not allowed to learn fuck you huwite"
longform norte video? HELL YEAH!!
No such thing as appropriating the wendigo, quit being woke
Super interesting hearing the comparisons between the in-game lore and real life inspirations. Awesome video, man!
So the Snallygaster is a misappropriation of Germanic folklore but they're white so who cares? Fuck off with the woke bs.
My profile on nearly everything is Windigo themed and I have been WAITING for this video. Love your content Norte!
I have mixed feelings on the Wendigo tangent, on one hand I do believe it is important to have a respect for the original legends and those who told them, it is also not exploitative to creatively adapt things — folklore or otherwise, as culture is a zeitgeist. Just as many fictional medias portray dragons or zombies different from their original portrayals in Europe and Asia, a wendigo can just as steadily be evolved upon as cultural diffusion spreads itself. You seem to equate these adaptations with "depicting Natives as savages" and it feels like you didn't even read any of the stories you criticized at all. I'm not a Native, I can't speak on behalf of natives, and I understand that wendigos have a much more spiritual association with them than other cryptids – but to call every media that depicts a Wendigo "insensitive" when medias like Until Dawn get a shadow of it right, and to call it wrong for other people to enjoy a supernatural legend is wrong within itself. I don't mean to sound like a baseless "Keep woke shit out of your videos" Anti-SJW type (those commenters are a headache in themselves), as I think these things are important to discuss and that it is important to not forget where these stories came from, but it comes across as awfully pretentious to monologue about it being morally wrong to make your own spin on an old story when making new spins on old stories is what storytelling is. There is a fine line to walk, yes, and I will say that some examples can be a bit exploitative or insensitive, and that some of your criticism isn't unwarranted, but there is a beauty in a concept changing over time as many other people make their own ideas of it (assuming they aren't actually insulting the cultures the originals came from).
And as I said, I agree the use of "Wendigo" in Blackwood's story is questionable, but it feels like you're making assumptions about the intentions of the story without having read it firsthand.
Some people say The Mothman WARNED of The Impending Bridge Collapse as It stirred up encounters about a week or two before it, One Couple said it Landed on their Car as they were on their way to it and kept them in the car then took off Nearly 15 minutes later, I believe if it's real, Its not Hostile, it's An Ally, and I'm part Muscogee and my Pepaw told me about the Curse of Cannibalism: Wendigos, They are the Ultimate Predators, Muscogee Indians Believe they are Thin AF, Snow White, And ungodly Strong, Feasting on ANYTHING it can Grab, Thermal Vision like a Snake, and Will replicate Noises of its prey to trick and Ambush it's Prey, Well Depicted by Until Dawn, Pepaw's Mother Believed she once Saw a Wendigo Rip a Fox in Half, Algernon's Wendigo can Screw off
Unalived?
It'd be nice if you could say basic words without fear of reprisal.
Great job on the wendigo segment brother.
Stop with the crying about cultural appropriation. Thats whats wrong with the world today. Life so easy with nothing serious to worry about so you gotta find something to complain about.
I wonder what demons would look like if they existed in Fallout? Probably just a reskinned Deathclaw that breathes fire, but still.
I don't know how but the only encounter I had with the Flatwood monster in 76 was at a C.A.M.P. I had on the side of the cliff near Whitespring
LOVED THE VIDEO but you getting startled by zachariah at 3:55 was too real. that's how it be playing a game in first person HAHA
I killed one of those Snaly monsters today! Talk about interesting.
Something I've recently observed is the strong lack of anything Native American/Indigenous Peoples inclusive.
Primarily in Fallout (as I love Fallout)
In recent Fallout games in which you can create the look of your character, you can create White, Black, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, and Hindian (my own term to differentiate be between Indians and Native Americans).
You cannot create a Native American/Indigenous Peoples character.
The legends and history of those peoples have been, and continue to be whitewashed, or just dismissed and destroyed.
No one has created any mods in order to create an Indigenous person in any of the Fallout games.
We don't hear about any of their singers and musicians, unless they sing 'White songs'.
They rarely get to play themselves in movies with, or about Native Americans. And if they do, they are most often relegated to a villainous role.
Not always. But most often.
The point of this post is that it is a tragedy of continued elimination of entire peoples. Trying to "prove" they never existed. Or "just happened to die out hundreds of years ago. Oh, well."
Tragedy.
Thank you for showing respect and pointing out what truly happened with the Indigenous Peoples stories in current tellings.
Great episode. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Be Excellent and Party on.
Got spooked when he mentioned Tulare county lol I was like "oh shit someone knows about us "
Phasmaphobia for the ghosts slide had me do a double take
Do we know what happened to all the us general like Braxton or chase. I wish we got more info on what happened to them after the war if any of them where enclave I mean those were big name generals they had to have been enclave
The snallygaster is my favorite American cryptid. I’m salty that the snallygaster in the game looks nothing like the creature it gets is name from. Seriously, Bethesda created a creature with many eyes, and they decided to name it after a cyclops???
I'm not from the Algonquin tribe but I'm so happy to finally find a YouTube video that touches on the Wendigo that doesn't immediately go into the appropriated version and instead explains it's origins in Native culture, it's significance to the culture and the lessons that it was meant to represent. I've had to explain alot to my friends how the Skinwalkers they know are not the Skinwalkers of indigenous culture same with the Wendigo and it makes me so happy that this video may educate people more on the true identity of the Wendigo and the beautifully intricate culture of Indigenous Peoples. Thank you so much from an Otoe Missourian Native♥️
western wendigo's are far more scary so i don't give a shit about the arguments of cultural appropriation, they way I look at it is the western version is a spin off to the original, people who are complaining complain about everything being cultural appropriation
are you joking? i guess Dracula is appropriation since its been changed so much from vlad the Impaler. or anything with mummies is a offense to people from Egypt. anything with the Chupacabra. oh and ZOMBIES, how dare we appropriate that from Haitian culture. i sure hope you didn't watch or play any media that was based on zombies, that would make YOU a culture appropriator. the fact you even bothered to put all that wendigo appropriation crap in this video and be serious about it is just mental. should of just laughed that stupidity off and left it out.
As a native, the idea of the Wendigo being used for "cultural appropriation" is dumb. In fact, I believe that the term "cultural appropriation" is extremely overused, with the idea of it being absolutely lost in its current meaning. If people not of that culture want to use something from that culture, good! That means that whatever it is that they're borrowing from that culture is just better for whatever circumstance it is! The idea of cultural appropriation is only brought on by our government to further divide the people, and those who claim cultural appropriation are hurting the country as a whole just as much as the people trying to "fight back" by dressing purposefully offensively in order to prove a point.
3:53 u jumped so hard there lmao i did too
Great video, as always! The Beast of Beckley could also be inspired by the Beast of Gévaudan, a man-eating animal/s that terrorized areas of France between 1764 and 1767. Most sightings described it as a wolf or dog-like etc creature. The excellent film ""Le Pacte des Loups" ("Brotherhood of the Wolf") gives a fictionalized interpretation of this creature and events surrounding it.
Watch on 1.25 speed. Thank me later
Until Dawn absolutely got the wendigo perfect and gave it a really good depiction, it was extremely faithful to the real world belief.
They just mad the Western Wendigo is badass and the "indigenous folklore" one sucks cock
If that’s a BEAR then all it’s front legs joints are reverse opening. That shit aint a bear unless it’s got that genetic swimmers shit in the wild..
Honey come quick! N_orte has uploaded another video that’s over 30 minutes long!
Seriously though…love it!
i think the best westernized depiction of indigenous criptids is Supernatural, well at least at the beginning of the series. For example the Wendigo: they even go so far and try to explain what it is and where the name comes from.
Theres 2 things 76 did well and better than 4 imo. The enemy variety/design and the map
I don’t know what I like more, the fallout or real life versions of mythical creatures.they are all so interesting
Something to note about the Flatwoods Monster is that artist's impressions were actually NOT matching what was being described. According to the actual witnesses, what they saw was more like a machine than a creature. It had no limbs, just two antenna of some sort sticking straight out of the sides where the arms would be. The metal spade-shaped cowl and the round "head" with the glowing eyes is correct, as is the general shape of the body, but when you render what they actually saw, it kinda looks a bit like a Dalek from Doctor Who — albeit predating Doctor Who by almost a decade.
