  1. If you had Fort Jefferson in Florida, you should have also had Fort Massachusetts on Ship Island, one of the barrier islands off the coast of Mississippi. It was active during the American Civil War, and tourists have complete run of the place (at least we did in the late 70s, when us 3 youngest kids would visit for the day). The granite it was built from was mined in Massachusetts, hence the name. It had cannons so powerful that they could shoot cannonballs from Ship Island to the neighboring islands. (Interesting fact about Ship Island: It was literally cut in two during the August 1969 Hurricane Camille. That passage is now called 'Camille Cut' and apparently sharks love to gather there.)

  2. What doomed the stone castles and fortresses? CANNONS! By the late 15th century, with the development of cast-iron shot, having a density almost three times that of stone, all attackers had to do was concentrate enough cannon fire and a breach of fortress walls would soon be imminent.

  3. This was a really impressive episode. I’ve actually seen several of these fortresses and there are many, many more equally rich from a historical perspective but this was a really compelling offering. Thank you!

  5. You are not mentioning three huge structures in Poland:
    1) Malbork ( Marienburg ) Teutonic Knights castle, by far largest red brick gothic castle in the World
    2) Srebrna Gora in Sudety Mountains, largest mountain fortress in Europe
    3) Klodzko fortress also in Sudety Mountains.
They are much bigger than most of fortresses shown in your film.
