11 Days Solo Camping in the Yukon Wilderness – E.10 – Floatplane Pick-Up & Bear Prints:

Looking at my topographic maps on the morning of Day-10, I realized I’d gone over 90kms the day before. I now had 30kms to make it to Taco Bar where my floatplane would pick me up if I make it there on time. I was on the Peel River and not long into my paddle that day I looked up river to see another group of canoeists. A float plane was at Taco Bar picking up a group of paddlers that’d come down the Wind River and one of them recognized me as a YouTuber as I climbed out of the canoe. I un outfitted my canoe in preparation for the float plane, set up my tent and got a fire going to bool water for pasta with dehydrated meat sauce that my wife made. It was a relaxing evening. I find some very fresh bear tracks behind my campsite the next day and a float plane came to pick up another group that’d come down the Wind….clearly the wind is a much more well traveled river than the Bonnet Plume. Anyways, I was able to jump on their flight to get out back to Mayo and called it a trip. What an adventure!

  1. Thanks for sharing another awesome adventure. 20 years to ration creamer, too funny…almost as funny as when you schooled me on the correct method of stirring coffee on an earlier adventure.

  2. Jim, sure seems different with kindred spirits in your video! My favorite part would be the solitude of the video, scenery and Grayling! I pick up many tips from you in my adventures…always great to learn something new! Absolutely love your pots…they go with you on every trip! Looking forward to your next adventure with a smile on my face! Thank you!

  4. I missed it before, but on rewatching I picked up that the series title is based on the poem of the same name by Robert W. Service and I have no excuse for missing that given that at the start of Ep 01 & 02 you indeed recite verse 7

    There's a land where the mountains are nameless,
    And the rivers all run God knows where:
    There are lives that are erring and aimless,
    And deaths that just hang by a hair;
    There are hardships that nobody reckons;
    There are valleys unpeopled and still;
    There's a land – oh, it beckons and beckons,
    And I want to go back – and I will.

    Very powerful and very aptly chosen for this series. The rest of the poem is powerful too. Perhaps Jim can give us a recital of the full poem in a future summaries issue of this entire journey. πŸ‘

  7. Just incredible Jim. I tried to watch a movie tonight, but nah way too boring.. I'm waiting Jim Baird! Too many favourite parts… the whole series was just amazing. But probably panning for gold and finding an elusive nugget was pretty darn cool.

  10. So great to be able to experience this awesome river all over again with your videos. We paddled the Bonnet Plume fourteen years ago and your excellent filming brought back many fond memories and emotions of one of the prettiest and most exciting northern wilderness rivers we’ve ever paddled. Thank you Jim for the truly excellent work.

  12. Excellent adventures once again. Butter keeps longer than one would think. The portage through the canyon on the bonnet plume was amazing scenery. Beast mode on day 9 paddling 90 some km, way to go! The gold nugget was nice bonus. Another paddling route that would be wicked is down the kechika to the liard and then to liard hotsprings
