While King Seleucus was waging a merciless war against the Roman invaders in northern Greece, his brother, the Seleucid general Antiochus, hearing of troops arriving by ship in the south, decided to gather an army that could march fast and endure the arid lands. Therefore, he rallied his most valiant horse soldiers and 100 elephants to march towards the Peloponnese.
His Syrian elephants, powerful and imposing, were the best trained for war. The Indian elephants were fast mounts with great agility.
When Antiochus arrived in the southern Peloponese, he did not expect such a large army. Indeed, reports had mentioned between 1000 and 3000 men, but it was 10,000 eager Roman legionaries that stood below the hill.
Nevertheless, there was no question of turning back, Antiochus had vowed to stop the enemy in the south and let his brother Seleucus push the enemy back in the north safely.
