10 Times Science Flirted With Bringing About a Zombie Apocalypse

The most inescapable part of life is death. Despite that, science keeps coming closer and closer to ways to reverse death, undo death, or just ignore it entirely. Not that weโ€™re really making zombies or resurrecting anyone yet, but you never know what the future holds.

  1. "Hearts and brains are tinker-toys!" I don't think bringing the cells back to life is all that impossible, but if the thoughts and memories that make you who you are, are gone, there doesn't seem to be much point.

  2. I recently read a really mind-blowing article about a study done on Mycobacterium leprae, which causes leprosy. The bacteria can stimulate the kidney to grow new, entirely healthy cells. It reprograms a type of cell in the kidney into a stem-cell like state which then grows the kidney, much like a fetus grows a kidney. It has exciting consequences not just for doing away with the need for kidney transplants, but for research into reversing aging in other organs as well.

  3. Imagine dying, then being brought back to life again, except your body is missing and you're just the equivalent of a Futurama head-in-a-jar, conscious, living, but stuck there, can't go anywhere, can't talk (cos no lungs), can't really do anything, just trapped there, imprisoned, ugh, scary thought… :S

  4. If someone stops breathing or their heart stops, they are dead. So they are already bringing back the dead. Why focus on the brain, our ancestors didn't. Is it just because that's the organ we haven't saved yet? Screw these scientists and their ethical concerns. They're just scared, not moral.

  5. You have to wonder about Russia leading the way on "resurrection" technology. Who were they told to bring back first? Lenin or Stalin? Or maybe it's just a gambit to ensure VP retains power for several lifetimes?
