10 Presidential Firsts You Never Knew About

The United States has had 45 different Presidents up to and including Joe Biden, who is the 46th President. How can he be 46 if there were 45? Who was the first president to pardon a turkey, or ride in an airplane? Let’s take a look at some other things pioneered by various Commanders-in-Chief.

  2. Better Jimmy Carter fact is he and Berry Gordy the creator of Motown are 2nd half cousins.
"Berry Gordy, I was the son of James Thomas Gordy, a white farmer and a female slave in Georgia. This James Thomas Gordy was also, by his wife Harriet Emily Helms, the great-grandfather of Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, making Berry Gordy III and Carter second half-cousins."

  3. I just need people to acknowledge the fact that I randomly looked at how much time was left in the video on the red line and thought “That looks like it’s halfway through”, and stopped it at exactly 4:35.
I also just smoked a joint like 20 minutes ago lol… and my mind is just straight up 🤯 now 😄

Oh and cool video Simon lol 👍

  5. I don't know why I think this, but I always thought the US had 52 states, but given outside of the US, nobody really gives a crap about their geography, I guess mistakes can be made… 😛

  6. Another Presidential first, James Madison (serving from 1809-1817) was the first President to declare war on another country.

Although largely forgotten, especially in Britain, and probably overshadowed by the Nepoleonic Wars, after several incidents where Britain tried to retrieve "deserters" who had left for the United States, refusing to recognise their status as American Citizens and in so doing ignoring American neutrality in the Nepoleonic Wars, tensions rose between the US and Britain. However, while the newly changed British government sent a peace message to the Americans, it took so long crossing the Atlantic that James Madison asked for a Declaration of War against Britain on June 18th 1812. Although the war ended inconclusively, with no territory changes, under the terms of the Treaty of Ghent, it wasn't before Madison embarrassingly had to become the first President to evacuate Washington DC as British troops raided the city and set fire to the White House and Congress Hall and many other buildings

  7. I think I knew all of these. Please have another go and find some less well known ones. Or maybe presidential lasts. Who was the first sitting president to fly in a plane or be photographed?

  8. Was it hard saying "a hospital" instead of just "hospital"? I've gotten so used to hearing the way British youtubers refer to "hospital" without an "a/the" that hearing Simon include it was a bit grating.

  9. Interesting that McKinley hated riding in a car and predicted it would never catch on, and John Quincy Adams hated how he looked in a photograph. Eisenhower was the first to speak on a color TV broadcast, on which he wore a black coat and white shirt, with a tie that was such a dark shade of blue it appeared black. It seems that presidents just don’t take to the new technologies they are supposed to highlight for the public.
Also, Calvin Coolidge (ironically called “Silent Cal”) was the first president to speak on a film with sound, delivering a speech in the White House Rose Garden that was awkward and unpersuasive. Same pattern.

  10. Lincoln could never have pardoned a Thanksgivings turkey, mainly because, despite what decoration manufacturers have made everyone believe, it was Lincoln who started the current Thanksgivings, but not in its current form: it was a festivity to remember the end of the Civil War, it didn't gain traction until several presidencies later, and the turkey as a centerpiece of a Thanksgivings table didn't come until even later.

  11. There’s far too many firsts that are celebrated for no reason. Don’t do it too often or eventually it won’t mean anything. Just because you’re the first woman, black, oldest, youngest, or anything doesn’t mean we need to celebrate whenever you do something for the first time. It’s fine if it happens cause it will happen eventually but there’s no need for major headlines on news for it.
