In today’s video, we’re going over Monster Taming Games that are NOT Like Pokemon. This video is not meant to be a slight towards the Pokemon franchise, but rather a way to show off some games in the genre that take the Monster Taming Formula in different directions.

  1. Myth Caller was also based on another series I made- Xander the Monster Morpher, which started in 2012. I literally made the Xander series out of an outright REFUSAL to make a pokemon-like when my friend brought up the idea lmao

  2. Monster Racer monster racer monster racer see dragon booster no you go back only a few like you. Fossil fighter is also good game its kind of close to yokai watch with its spin a wheel to face your dino in combat. Their also that one ds game spetroid? I think it's called that's a fun live action rpg tamer. Shin mi gami demon summoner also good. Oh their umm what was it again Mana something on gameboy color that's pokemon clone but you catching dream monster that's fun game.

  3. Even ones that are more similar to Pokemon don't get enough credit for the things they do differently. This is a great subgenre and I am glad you are encouraging people to stop looking at them all as Pokemon clones and appreciate them within the context of their own subgenre. People don't call every 1st person shooter a Doom Rip Off!

  4. Currently I'm up for more Cassette Beasts and Palworld info.
I'm kinda curious what you would think of some of these "Palworld has gone to far videos".
I image it would be more fun to see you react to those instead of giving them the clicks myself and stuff.

  5. I really love Monster Sanctuary and that's the best game in this list, in my opinion. And, while Monster hunter stories 2 have some nice designs, the combat is very, VERY shallow (it's the very definition of "press normal attack to win". Plus, the AI companions do most of the damage for you). What kept me going to play to the end was my addiction to crafting mechanics.

  6. palworld seems like such a clusterF* of ideas. Sounds like any game devs nightmare – wanting to implement features but just overcomplicates the game and makes the overall gameplay loop rather odd.

Patch quest is great – i strumbled upon the dev log videos for this one recently and its really interesting to watch the process and how much the game changed during development. Stripping out ideas that just didnt work.

  7. How about Pokemon games that are "not like Pokemon", however absurd it may sound? For example my favorite Pokemon game is actually Pokemon Conquest, which is… a tactics 😛

  8. I can still see a bunch of potential for monster taming as a genre. People are just starting to stretch further away from pokemon and it makes me super excited to see what they are going to be able to do once the new concepts have been tested and polished to completion

  9. It seems like Cosmic Soldier 1985 was the 1st Turn Based Monster Taming JRPG unless something else predates it and I guess could be considered a Monster Taming Game because of horror movies like Xenomorph. However, I feel Megami Tensei 1987 was the 1st Turn Based Monster Taming JRPG to have preestablished/incorporate other popular core aspects/core gameplay features in a Turn Based Monster Taming JRPG that you see games use today but aren't found in Cosmic Soldier.

  10. I may not like what I've seen of Palworld, and some of it's monster designs may be… very uncreative for lack of better words, but its very much not like Pokémon in any real way outside of the afformentioned monster designs. Idk why anyone would think it is. Pokémon doesn't have guns (Not counting the first season of the anime). Lol.

  12. I'd definitely love to see a part 2. Also a look at games that either aren't Monster Tamer games or at least not primarily Monster taming games but have Monster taming elements or Monster taming systems would be cool too.

  13. I’m hoping we get more monster raising games in the future like Monster Rancher. It’s a part of the genre I want to see expanded on in different ways. I love RPGs, but I’m eager to see what developers come up with in the future as well. I’m also super excited for Cassette Beasts. These games look great.

  14. I'd love to see more videos like this. Especially things that revolve have mounts as a mechanic.
All of the games shown here are high on my list of the games I'd play in the genre.

  15. Monster Hunter Stories 2 is amazing! Love the combat!
PATCH QUEST IS AMAZING it is Early Access, but in a mostly complete state, the solo-dev is just working on a few extra zone to make the map bigger.

  16. Would you count custom robo as a monster tamer, I feel like they should personally but also I would like to see more videos like this, but that spends more time on a smaller number of games or has a longer length in general, also with them focusing in on either indies or retro games
