10 Hour Impressions: Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga

I saw Symphony of War: Nephilim Saga on Summer Games Fest and it peaked my interest. This is basically my thoughts on the game after about 10 hours of playing. So you could call it a first impression or a review.

  1. I found the safest way to use rogue's variants is mixing them with heavies for protection. This is probably more powerful than a full heavy squad because a single unit with 1 hp on the front can waste your entire squad melee damage and rouge can murder backline to minimize overkill. For light unit without stealth atk, you can ambush in town, wood and swamp which allow them to attack twice first then only take damge once. But it's still risky because enemy heavy hitter can eat them alive when attacking. Tbh, devs should rework their terrible "zone of control" mechanic allow heavy units to properly cover squishy ones.

  2. Mercenary can be used as non-leader, if when you buy a Bizarro unit/marketplace unit and they got their own squad, that be too much advantage for you as there is another squad instantly. Problem imo is the LDR. Often when I found a strong unit from Bizzaro, I bought them and I cant put them in a squad I want them to…OR sometimes can't even put them on any squad. Because of LDR. I get why they limit it like that but…

By the time they can be put, stronger units who are having higher level are already available. Makes it kinda frustrating to buy units.

  3. I hadn’t been using Diana much because she did so much damage and was so effective I assumed she was a temporary character like Z what’s his face. I prefer to level up characters I get to keep.

  4. Ok I'm wondering, how did you even miss, that this game is inspired by 3 series: Fire Emblem series, Final Fantasy Tactics series, and the biggest single influence OGRE BATTLE SERIES!!

I think your review misses the mark a bit.

  5. You need to learn the mechanics of the game before making a video about it. Read in the in game tutorials. There’s also vids on YouTube by the developer explaining the features of the game

  6. the party system reminds me of old games such as tactic ogre from snes back then and each of them can be change classes that might gives addition trait, making composition seems a bit hard because sometimes you can have unit that offensives fully stats but with affinity "earth" which gives growth bonus on HP instead offensives stats, one of many things i likes on this game is, the unit and items that being sells on marketplace are random even tho you load from the last battle before seize the main objectives, this can be abused in case you didnt get unit or item you want from marketplace, you can go to title and go to quickload on the last quicksave right before you seize the main objectives, then again can be tiring to find the "ideal" unit and items from marketplace because sometimes there is "unique" unit which can be distinguish by the detail text on bottom. as the battle itself sometimes challanging but since normally the enemies only targeting "the lowest" morale friendly unit on their range, this can be used as making strategy like makes those the team with lowest morale team being fully defender type to get the aggro then finish them on the next turn or such, so far im still at chapter 22 and i really likes the overall, there is some that i kinda dislike like for example, a friendly unit that can heal "must spend" all of their heal instead just like "i just want to heal 1 unit only", another is, once there is unique story char become leader of their own squad, i cant take them back or disband so i can like remodified by joining them to mc squad etc. my apologize if my opinion is a bit hard to understand as english is not my main but i hope you get what i mean. cheers for the developers for this good game

  7. Ok, I'm going to pin this here because I'm getting a lot of comments about not mention Ogre Battle and Fire Emblem as inspiration for the game.

I've never played Ogre Battle or Fire Emblem. The last release of Fire Emblem, at the time, didn't interest me all that much. Also, I hadn't heard of Ogre Battle until you guys mentioned it in the comments. That's why I compared it to Advance Wars, D&D, and X-COM because I've played those games some what.
