Why Fire Emblem's Creator Broke the Law.

This is a feature length documentary on one of the most fascinating and misunderstood parts of Fire Emblem: The origin of Fire Emblem 64, the departure of Fire Emblem’s director, Shouzou Kaga, and the consequences of his actions leading to Nintendo going to court with him and his publishing company. Long before Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Fire Emblem: Engage, this series was being led by a man who Nintendo will not even acknowledge anymore.

  2. 24:37 It's really ironic how this portrait was already changed to avoid copyright-trouble.(The original blue haired one is still unused in the game's files tho.)
it's also incredibly funny how it is possible that IS and Nintendo actually Uno-reversed the Law definitions into Kaga's face in the end. Even tho I couldn't speak for it because I never really looked into the Saga games, many say that FE7 is to TRS what TRS was to Kaga-FE.

  3. The stinger in the marketing angle of the second lawsuit is Kaga's use of the heart of FE's background lore to build Tearing Saga on – the fall of the dragons/Manaketes and how their folly affects the successor human civilizations.

Also, although IS distanced themselves from Kaga they never abandoned that key part of the lore, even if it took them like a decade to return to Archanea.

Also I find it hilarious that the background to the lawsuits are essentially two different Archanea knock offs.

  4. I absolutely love Kaga and his games, and I wonder what a world with more of his FE games would look like… but I’m thankful for what we got after he left, as FE6-FE10 are all damn good games. I really wish the franchise could tap back into the magic of that era because thankfully Kaga has still made games since then, whereas the post Kaga era of FE feels long lost.

  5. I'd like to imagine, if their relationship didn't sour as much as it did, we would have eventually gotten a crossover between the two series. The director just fked by being too passionate and not wanting to abandon his creation in his impatience…

  6. I love how the FE game creator referred to new players to the series as newbies love it. Although his obsession with Marty’s game and region seems unhealthy.
The N64DD should have been a part of the N64 lifespan from the beginning cuz for the most part everyone knew it was for adding DLC to games already on the console heck we may have been able to play Luigi in Super Mario 64 making it a 2 player game and we could of had more temples in OOT but Nintendo’s shortcomings hit hard cuz they’re too narrow minded on turning out a profit over actual creativity and ingenuity imagine how much more data and stuff the N64 could have if you could have incorporated the cartridges and the DD at the same time that would have been more data than the PS1 and Nintendo would have arguably made more money and release more games on their console honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t do this cuz of secret meetings with Sony and they didn’t do it.

  7. To address the ending — how would it feel to have your baby ripped away from you by a giant, malicious corporation? I can only imagine the pain he must feel, having his work in captivity like this. This is an excellent example of why the creator and creation should, for better or worse, not be legally separable. The company who funds a game should only get to profit from it for a fixed period, and after that, it belongs to the real creators — the humans who made it — including the rights to all derivative works.

  8. This reminds me of a post a made in a Facebook group where I thanked all the various directors, producers, writers, and so forth that had worked on fire emblem. It also reminds me where I said I personally think fire emblem become a better franchise once Kaga wasn't in charge, I'm looking forward to it.

  9. I find this absolutely fascinating. prior to this video I only heard Nintendo striking down Kaga's series for minor similarities. There is indeed a bit of truth in that, in a sense, but this video really does clarify so much. I suppose it was rather easy to assume Nintendo was just striking someone down without just cause since…well they do that a lot. I think that's why this video is important since it shows what both parties did without sugarcoating it. Excellent job to everyone involved in this project. I'm sure it was quite the effort judging by how well it turned out.

  10. I've played Shadow Dragon and a sample of Genealogy, but I breaking out in a cold sweat just hearing that Thracia 776 enemies can BUY WEAPONS. How has the AI gotten dumber?

So when he said the 64 game would use the "Mystery of the Emblem" stage, anyone else think he could have been referring to Anri's story? I can see where there'd be room for expansion on the other end, but I'm wondering how that would've worked (sorry, I'm just already seizing on all sorts of possible stories here).

  11. I'm very grateful and thankful for you and everyone involved in this project for making this video.
I have a personal story related to this topic that I want to share. A very good friend of mine and I have known each other for about 8 years, and we both got into Fire Emblem around the same time. We taught each other different things about the games, shared our own experiences, played different games at the same time (I played Archenea first while he played Jugdral first and vise versa) and eventually played Ike's games together. While we became knee deep into this series, we both found ourselves loving Kaga's games the most and began to look into what happened between him and Nintendo. At that time, there wasn't as much information as there is in this video, so the definitive answers to this topic became largely a mystery to the both of us. Now, he's moving out of the country in a few days to live somewhere else, and we won't be able to see each other for a long time. This video came at the perfect time and actually made me emotional. A conclusion to this story and ours with this series that means so much to me, and I'm sure him too. So once again I have to thank everyone involved.

  12. F you Nintendo, simple as. The last good Fire Emblem game is FE 10, the remakes are good but anything else that came out like Awakening, Fates and stuff is just kiddy shit.

  13. I’m surprised how intelligent the comments are on this video. I would’ve swore there’d be more than a few saying “Gah, Nintendo can’t tell Kaga not to rip off his own work”. Credits to the video for making it understandable.

Kaga clearly misled people into thinking Emblem Saga was part of the Fire Emblem series, and even if in his heart they are part of the same universe, he can’t advertise that. It would be like if George Lucas, after selling Star Wars to Disney, decided to make another Star Wars movie without telling Disney. First of all, Disney wouldn’t have paid so much if Lucas can just do that, and second, Lucas’s movie could conflict with whatever canon Disney wanted to go with.

  14. I used to think Kaga was a traitor and nothing more, but what info I've seen over the years, and especially this, I think it was a lot less malicious intent and more so just a lot of awful mistakes on his end. Maybe Kaga didn't realize fully that, if an IP belongs to a company, you can't touch it anymore. When you leave, that's it. It ain't yours anymore. Obviously he knew that much, but maybe he thought he could skirt around the law without realizing that law is written exactly for people who think they can skirt around it. The publisher and media outlets absolutely encouraged it, though. Those guys are always malicious.

The guy is still at fault though. Negligence is just as awful as malicious intent.

  15. It's sad because it's Kagas work and vision and yet Nintendo gets all the credit. Nintendo isn't someone you should feel sorry for in my opinion. Vestaria saga is so good people, if you haven't played it, try it out!

  16. I feel like most people always portray Kaga as the underdog in this situation to take back his own creation but man, I always thought what he tried to pull off was downright insane.

Like, my dude, you literally put "Emblem" in the title you ain't fooling no one. And I understand the feeling of taking what's yours with you, but the truth is if you're working to create something with other people within a company that IP isn't just yours for the taking.

Although it might be weird coming to the realization their project grew big enough to become that in the first place. Perhaps in the NES days with a smaller team it felt more personal.

Don't get me wrong, anyone and especially him got the right to do a Fire Emblem-like game, but trying to suggest it's THE Fire Emblem is kinda crazy.

  17. I'm really curious now

If Kaga got into major legal trouble of blatantly connecting Tear Ring Saga to Fire Emblem, specifically Marths games, how did Tetsuya Takahashi get away with the connections to Xenogears in the Xenosaga games (and by the extension Xenoblade series)

Because from what I remember about Xenosaga, there's a child that Shion sees in her visions that literally is just Elly from Xenogears and of course the Zohar appears in the Xenosaga series (and Xenoblade 2 although renamed to Gate in Japanese/Conduit in English)

  18. It's sad because it would have been totally legal to say, "Made by the Creator of Fire Emblem" in the marketing and it would have probably been equally as successful. The PS1 ended up having a massive audience – even a small attach rate meant big returns on investment.

  19. Imagine losing parental rights to your child.
That's how I imagine Kaga felt about not being able to continue building and telling about the world he created. Legally, yes, Nintendo "owns" all rights to Fire Emblem. Morally, though? I can't help but side with Kaga. Imagine making a contract with an employer, doing all this work for said employer with YOUR ideas being used on their behalf and making them money, but you end up having problems with your employer and naturally you want to leave the company and continue using your ideas for your own benefit, because… they're your ideas. Buuut, the contract says you can't use your ideas outside of the company regardless if you have sentimental or personal investment, so… you either stick with the employer that you now no longer like (possibly even hate) and continue making money for them, or you walk away and leave your baby behind with them.
I can't blame Kaga for trying.
