This is the second story iโ€™ve heard about a man in a cave and just like the last one, it made me feel some kind of internet.

  1. Man, it's heartbreaking with how it ends. But the cave, strangely enough, it's almost as if it's a giant, living monstrous being that just refuse to let this man go nor rest. Parried away whenever people attempted to rescue Floyd. Scary to think about tbh

  2. Honestly though, you're 100% right if something like this happened now, every big time influencer would be there trying to get in that cave to milk a dying man like "Hey guys i snuck in this creepy cave at 3AM to see wild coyote's tear a trapped man apart, this is so poggers".

  3. He finally gave himself peace and surrendered hope when the light literally went out. Thing is, he might have pulled through if they had put a radio down there to give him some hope once the lights went out.

  4. This has to be one of the biggest monkey's paw stories ever. All he wanted was to make his cave famous and it did become famous. All it cost was his life and death.

  5. I've heard my fair share of cave exploration deaths and accidents but this one is more painful because of how FAST he could've been rescued had anyone stopped, used their heads, and consider what's the best course of action to save the guy. It's even more disturbing that people at the time had such a morbid fascination with death let alone treated this like an attraction. I cannot help but wonder how fast he could've been rescued if they contacted the right people and kicked the onlookers out of the area since it's clear they were a factor for the cave collapsing.

Hell, if they had gotten Gerald the same day that it was discovered that Floyd was stuck there he wouldn't have to die in that cave, alone and likely so scared. A shame that Floyd's dad was a useless bag of potatoes and people were more than happy to desecrate his body. I sure hope the man has found the freedom of eternity after suffering so long in the dark.

  6. This was the most intriguing story I've heard in a while. I'm so used to Internet Historian being satirical, but he was overall honorable to the memory of this poor guy.

  7. As weird as this might seem, that you for reacting to this. When I scrolled the comments watching it on IHโ€™s channel and found out he didnโ€™t survive, it became really hard to watch until I realized I could, essentially, watch it with someone else. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  8. I was thinking about this story again today and just realized something. If Floyd had simply stayed completely still the moment he broke his lantern, everything would've been completely different. His brother still would've showed up and found Floyd simply chilling in complete darkness. No trapped leg, no cave in, also no story and we would've never heard about it but yeah. Hindsight is 20/20 of course. Crazy story though.

  9. You wanna know something that makes it even more messed up? The whole reason he was there was in the hopes that he could make the cave a popular attraction. He got exactly what he wanted and it killed him…

  11. Regarding that question about where Johnnie Gerald had been before he showed up, I checked out a different documentary about this whole thing on a channel called Scary Interesting, which sheds a bit of light on that.

The thing is, Floyd was really good at cave exploring. He was so good at it, he legitimately didn't understand why so few people could get to him, because he didn't see any of that whole route as that big of a deal. When Johnnie first heard about Floyd, he basically thought "Well, it's Floyd. He can handle it." It was only after a couple days passed and Floyd was still stuck that he realized "Oh shit, this is actually serious" and made his way over.

Another thing I felt was interesting that Internet Historian didn't get into was that Johnnie was a bigger guy than Homer, Miller, and Burden, and at first couldn't get through that last tunnel. He had to spend three hours widening it just to reach Floyd in the first place.

John got turned around and stuck, but could not be rescued. He was also stuck upside down which contributed to his much faster decline. His wife was heavily pregnant at the time. He was able to say goodbye to her. It was sad because toward the end when his heart was failing he was too exhausted to keep trying, and his wife gave him permission to โ€œrestโ€ ๐Ÿ™ They couldnโ€™t get him out after, so they opted to seal the cave off as a memorial. Thing was extremely dangerous, anyway.

So yeah you wonโ€™t catch me anywhere near a cave like that lol
