How Tim Burton Failed Sweeney Todd

“But I never intended all this madness, never
And nobody really understood, well how could they?
That all I ever wanted was to bring them something great
Why does nothing ever turn out like it should?”
-Danny Elfman’s “Poor Jack”, from The Nightmare Before Christmas

  1. “aren’t interested in attending local and community theatre”

Sorry children, but that’s what theatre is. Get involved in your local community theatre whether as a patron or performer if you have any interest in theatre at all.

  2. Back in the early days of YouTube, someone uploaded the 1979 ballad of Sweeney, which made me OBSESSED with finding a copy of the musical (luckily another YouTube angel posted it, and it stayed up for a good couple of years). I used to quote it constantly with one of my classmates during chem class. It really drew me in, and was excellent at setting that eerie tone. Needless to say, Teenage-me was absolutely appalled in the movie theater when the opening credits started rolling 😂😂😂ps imma say it; that last bit of eye contact broadway Lovitt and Sweeney share at the end held more weight than any of the “chemistry” between the movie versions 🤷‍♀️

  3. Bro one minute into the video and you almost made me burst into tears after showing Sondheim's death announcement followed by "sometimes people leave you half way through the wood" 😭

  4. I'm impressed how many points against Burton's entire oeuvre comes up, here. I've always had Charlie Kaufman's impressions of Ed Wood like yeah there's a lot of emotional misses in terms of how utterly tragic his story is (I have the exact same opinion of the Iron Claw, actually! Include all the brothers, include all the worst parts of the story, it's a real story!!!!), you quote the one musical number from Nightmare Before Christmas that bothers me because Jack doesn't suffer consequences for his actions but acts like he does through an egomaniacal song about people not getting his uber goth Christmas, how weird his use of The Banana Boat song is in Beetlejuice–just stuff that I was thinking as I was watching the dissection of Sweeney and over time as people have been more critical of Burton thanks to his weird white supremacist screed, so I'm glad it was expounded upon even further about these tendencies in his other work.

That use of the Banana Boat song is so hauntingly white that I don't quite understand how people were like "HAHA YEAH THAT'S SUBVERSIVE" like no it's not it's how white people think of black people–"black people don't belong here! Tally me banana?!?! That's CRAZY given this is a fancy WHITE PEOPLE dinner!" Like what the fuck is that fucking scene and why did the ghosts even think that was a good scare???

  5. Burton trying make Sweeney Todd more sympathetic ironically makes him less so. The emotional core rests in this being a classic tragedy, aka the fatally flawed hero brings about his own downfall and learns his lesson just a moment too late. He's quite literally blinded by his lust for vengeance that he can only see Lucy as this beautiful tableau in his mind instead of a complex, living person. It's only after he's done the unthinkable that he's able to see and accept her for who she truly is, kisses her and tells her he's home. In death she's no longer a perfect young wife but an old "half crazed" beggar woman, and he loves and wants her still.

  6. I have been working on my own video on Tim Burton's Sweeney for about 6 months now, I am commenting this before watching because I wanna see if we have the same gripe, I love the movie in many many ways, but my biggest personal let down/ gripe w it is 'Johanna's personality; cut for time' to massively oversimplify it, nervous and keen to see what you have in store for me! <3

  7. I didn't get defensive until 1.5 hours in 😂😂😂 I was like "of course I won't get mad Lola! I don't care about Sweeney Todd that much." Apparently I DO have a soft spot for this movie 😅

  10. I was incredibly disappointed with Tim Burton's version when i first saw it. I grew up with George Hearn and Angela Lansbury. I felt like the Burton version drained the gallows humor right out of it that balanced the tragedy and horror.
