In this clip from our Patreon-exclusive podcast Party Chat, Ben Hanson talks with Bryan Vore and the MinnMax community in Discord about finally watching E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial for the first time. Even though he’s a big fan of Spielberg’s work, he was too scared by the movie as a kid. Where is Ana's internet cafe Benjamin?
I hope Hanson has seen Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun", I think it's one of the best films of all time and almost nobody talks about it.
And, yes, the beginning of ET is super creepy, especially for a young kid.
E.T. was only kind of scary compared to the Dark Crystal
contrarian rank list
I was brought to the cinema at the tender age of 4 to see E.T. in the cinema when it first came out (I was born in 1977). And I'm completely with Ben on the first 10 minutes. The scene in the corn field scared the living shit out of me. I can vaguely remember internalising my fright because I didn't want to make a scene in the theatre (lots of silent hyperventilating). But the sheer trauma of it must have exhausted me, because I fell asleep for most of the rest of the movie.
Suffice it to say, I have since watched it many times from start to finish, and it is a truly exceptional, all-time American classic.
I bow to Mr Spielberg's magic🎬
I hear Battledome makes for great outdoors projection viewing. You should give it a shot.
This is like when Young Frankenstein “scared the hell out of” Homer Simpson.
Loved this discussion! Makes me want to watch ET again! 🙂
Would taking a 4 and a 6 year old girl be okay for this?
We're planning on taking my nieces to the regal imax on Wednesday. Haven't seen it yet myself either
That opening scene gave me nightmares as a kid but didn't stop me from watching it whenever I had the chance.
Fun fact: E.T never says E.T. phone home. =O he says E.T. home phone. its just a weird thing that so many people remember it wrong. just like Darth vader never says, Luke i am your father.
I had forgotten the details of the Universal ride going to E.T.s planet. I actually rode it as a kid when I lived in California in 1990 (It was scarier than the movie because these Jeeps come charging our of the forest at you) but I remember as a kid finding the fact the E.T. says goodbye to you on the ride at the end absolutely amazing.
I think I had forgotten the going to the planet part because it wasn't in the movie, and as a kid I was just like "Well why wasn't all THIS in the movie?!"
MinnMax Phone Home !
Did some sort of YouTuber make this thumbnail?!?!??
Yes!! You should turn this type of podcast into something like Bill Simons “The Rewatchables” on the ringer. Love the movie vertical introduced here!
There are four separate sequels to E.T.:
1. E.T. II: Nocturnal Fears a treatment written by Spielberg & Mathison in 1982 that had Elliott & friends kidnapped by bad aliens and E.T. rescuing them. In the end, Spielberg decided not to do it.
2. E.T.: The Book of the Green Planet a novel by William Kotzwinkle from 1985 where E.T. is an outcast on his planet and Elliott goes through puberty.
3. E.T. Adventure the theme park ride launched in 1990 where E.T. has to save the Green Planet with his magic touch.
4. A Holiday Reunion the four minute 2019 Xfinity commercial where E.T. comes to visit an adult Elliott for Christmas.
Also, yes the screenwriter Melissa Mathison was married to Harrison Ford for almost 20 years and they had two children. She also wrote The BFG for Spielberg and his segment of the Twilight Zone movie.
Great episode. I'm a huge fan of E. T. As well. I have half of the lines memorized from this masterpiece. Loved hearing everyone's thoughts here. Tons of likable pieces to ET across other works like Terrorvision, Charlie's Angels, Mac & Me, Stranger Things etc. I hope MinnMax dives into a few other discussions on great movies like this in the future.
