It keeps being reported that Star Wars nearly caused a war between Libya and Tunisia because of the Sandcrawler being built close to the border, but in reality it was Tunisia, so where did the idea of Libya come from?

It’s probably just that someone heard the real story and misremembered (or intentionally changed) Algeria for Libya when they wrote it down because Libya is a more well-known country, then from there the Gaddafi speculation is just people saying things
There should be a name for the phenomenon of articles citing each other as sources. Makes internet research tricky to verify!

Doctor Who had a similar experience with 1972's "The Sea Devils" – the British government visited the BBC and asked where they got footage of their nuclear submarines, and the production team was like "…it's a model" but the concern was that other nations would watch the show and learn how British submarines worked.
