Eating Bivalves is Vegan: Nick & Vegan Gains Discussion || The Nutrivore Livestream Clip

#vegangains #thenutrivore #bivalves #veganism #discussion

Description: Nick (The Nutrivore) is a huge proponent of eating bivalves and Vegan Gains has always said it’s not vegan, because they are classified as animals. While he recognises that they are most likely not sentient, as they are lacking a brain, he’s following the precautionary principle. In this clip they discuss the topic: Is eating bivalves compatible with the vegan definition?

  1. I would say that a bivalve has a more complex structure than a severed finger.
Also the eating of bivalves would normalize the eating of beings instead of eating things that have roots.
I think the benefit of the doubt is the just principle.
#BoycottMeat and all other animal products of cruelty and exploitation in any way possible!
    Thanks for posting! 👍

  2. Yeah no substantive sentience is still a form of sentience to care about because the reductios can lead to violating human rights equal to that of a bivalve. My opinion is still they are not vegan because they are partially sentient and I don’t like the idea of holocausting partially sentient humans equal to bivalves. This is simply a form of utilitarianism viewpoint of certain sentience levels. It’s pure hypocrisy.

  3. The problem with this doesn’t actually prove Bivalves are actually brain dead nor equal to live body parts of humans. The research may very likely be wrong which is why we should give bivalves the benefit of the doubt and use the precautionary rule to not holocaust them. It is a cop out to justify holocausting an animal based on lack of understanding of the species with a lack of certainty of its sentience. There is no research that directly proves they aren’t sentient, so they should be equally treated with logical extension of human rights. Rights being life and not being exploited under any circumstances nor any purpose. The only exception should be self defense. Since bivalves don’t attack us, we have no justification to attack them. Also the reductios of holocausting bivalves based on their supposed lack of sentience can lead to rights violations/holocausts of humans based on the lack of understanding of the level of sentience. Understand? Fundamentally exploiting any animals is a direct contradiction to the principles of veganism. All animals are entitled to the same rights’ protections as we impose on humans to be logically consistent, thus applying the precautionary rule consistently.

  4. Nick doesn't want to discuss the responsibility one who rescues hens should have in making sure the hens spend the rest of their lives in comfort. The best way to ensure the hens live a life of comfort, is to implant them so that they no longer lay eggs. this way, their bodies regain strength, and there are no more risks of complications(and there are many), due to the burden of egg laying.

  5. The discussion seems to rest on the idea that sentience is a function of material structures; I'm skeptical of that perspective. I'm not sure, but it sounds like both of them see sentience, or consciousness?, as an epiphenomenon of material arrangements. I think there are good reasons to question that. I'm not exactly sure how a different view of consciousness would impact these kinds of discussions, but I think this alternative view should be taken into account. Great discussion.
