  1. I wish that the Churches of Christ polity model got more attention.

It is the most effective I know of for keeping narcissism and greed from taking over the lead pastors.

    The model is:

    1) congregation democratically elects board of unpaid elders

    2) Elders hire ministers, though often with help from search committees.

    3) the "preacher" position is usually called a "pulpit minister" as his job is to be the main teacher at all gatherings. He must have qualifications of a deacon, in addition to formal education OR verifiable experience doing ministry.

    4) other non-elder paid ministers can include Education, Outreach, Evangelism, Benevolence, et cetera.

    5) this allows a minister to be fired of he disagrees irreconcilably with the elders, and no elder has a special public-headship momentum to toss around in elder meetings.

    6) every "job" at the church besides elders and paid ministers is done by or under a deacon. Each deacon is assigned an elder to report to. Any women who do work for the church are under a deacon as well.

    7) a lot of gifted public speakers/teachers are not great counselors, so separating pulpit minister from church leadership just makes a lot of sense me. It's a system that allows for the fallibility of people, especially those drawn to being in the spotlight.
