Ofcom could pave way for Royal Mail to axe Saturday post, Sky News learns

Ofcom is to outline options for reforming Royal Mail’s service obligations, potentially paving the way for the abolition of Saturday postal deliveries.

The regulator is set to publish a consultation paper on reforming the Universal Service Obligation – and reducing the six-day delivery commitment to five days, along with increasing stamp prices, could be on the cards.

  1. Really says something, when they suggest to increase prices and reduce the service they provide. It seems standards are no longer a thing?

If workers are striking for fair pay, it shouldn't therefore then be passed onto the customers, when they are making huge profits. The service has been dire since it was privatised.

The whole audacity of it being brought up now, after how they have treated their staff speaks a lot. Disgusting.

  2. I remember when we still had two deliveries a day. And now we have just one that turns up late most days with incompetent zombies on the phone, delivering mail to the wrong address. Or maybe we are just incredibly unlucky. And now they want to stop a day altogether, as well as put up the cost of sending mail using their services. Surely it's time we had a new mail service to replace these jokers.

  3. I understand letters are the choice for Royal Mail, as I don’t know of an alternative but I highly recommend getting a DPD account for anyone who sells via eBay or similar platforms. Surprisingly Evri (formally Hermes) has been a great option too but only for the odd item here and there.
Anyone selling larger volumes of items should really consider a DPD account. They really was fantastic during Christmas period of 2022, when Royal Mail couldn’t handle the volume of parcels they was getting.

  4. Tories have been deliberately destroying and attacking the Post Office, if there is one thing we need and that is the Post Office. Negelect, destroy, sell off and reform. Why do people keep on voting for the Tories for, I don't get it?

  5. "Royal Mail could save up to £650m if it delivered letters just three days a week and £200m by stopping Saturday deliveries, the communications regulator has said." Even better; Royal Mail could take our letters to landfill and save even more.

  6. There seems to be a tendency to 'resolve' difficulties by reducing services. The post office wants to reduce deliveries. The water companies want not to treat waste water. The train companies axe trains because of a shortage of drivers. Is it a surprise that our economy appears to be stagnating?

  8. I get about 2 unsolicited letters a week. Not many people write letters anymore. It's all online. No bank statements, no official letters – all done on line. However I have parcels delivered everyday by various carriers. Times change I'm sorry to say. So dropping Saturday wouldn't affect me at all.
