Chocolate Golem: Yes, This is a Real D&D Monster

The Chocolate Golem is one of D&D’s little known gems. This golem, unlike the flesh, iron, clay, or stone golem didn’t make the cut to D&D 5E. It did, however, make its first appearance in AD&D. Whether you’re playing Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, or some other TTRPG, I hope you find the Chocolate Golem inspiring, and that it finds a place at your game table!

  1. What's preventing people, animals, and monsters from just eating them? That usually tends to be the downfall of anything made out of food. That and when the chocolate starts to melt due to it being a hot day its functions start being greatly diminished.

I am interested in the Chia golem however.

  2. I was thinking Hansel and Gretel. If I must elaborate, the party's given a quest to find two missing children from a town. Talking to some of the town spoke they have spotted a chocolate Golem near town, this chocolate Golem unknowns to the town or the party is controlled by a witch or a hag in the forest.

  3. I would love to see these used at a fancy event, imagine they all have meticulous construction so they look like real people turned into chocolate, and each one has different things, like a raspberry or orange cream center, toffee accents, ruby chocolate dress, etc., and once they're defeated they're entirely edible. Maybe people have to beat them in a coliseum event so they can be broken up and served as sort of a "dinner and a show" type deal? It would be amazing.

  4. The main thing I have in my head is a magic candy shop with one of these. Whether the owner is using it maliciously or not, a neat, cute little touch.

  5. An interesting idea for this creature would be something like "if you deal x fire damage it melts down into a chocolate ooze" and it has completely new ooze-based combat abilities n such. You can even have it do the reverse if you deal enough cold damage.

  6. This is the perfect companion for a Hansel-and-Gretel-esque hag who lives in the woods and lures children in with a house made out of candy. And the hag is the perfect companion monster to throw around those AoE fire and ice spells the golem benefits from but can't cast itself. Might even pepper in some lair actions that cause the stove to flare up or giant peppermints to chill the air for even more temperature effects . . .

  7. now we need cheese golems with fondue breath.

the sentient chocolate golem can be an up-market hero trap too. the "sentient" golem walks the party into a trap before revealing it isn't sentient, just a mouthpiece for the evil ruler, asking for help so the ruler can trap any heroes who might later try to stop his reign.

  8. You don't even need the golems to be hostile, maybe some group plans on attacking during a party and initially launches fire bolts at the golems, killing guests and aoeing the party.

  9. My wife actually had a really good suggestion of having an Aztec based temple with Sandstone golems and some chocolate golems with chili peppers mixed in shaped like Aztec statues because Aztecs like their chocolate with chili and she mentioned a spicy breath attack instead of the molten breath

  10. A concept: ice cream golem? This would be pretty much just a reskin of the chocolate golem, but it does cold damage with its attacks, and unlike the chocolate golem, it would be weak to fire damage. It would be especially cool if in combat they are within 5 ft of each other, and the chocolate golem takes fire damage, that it could then use its action to coat the ice cream golem with itself, giving them both a +2 to each ac, since it gives the ice cream golem a protective chocolate coating and the chocolate golem is chilled by the ice cream golem 🙂

  11. are there ice-golems (still didn't get to play DnD)? becaus if you add an ice-golem-statue to the first scenario it could be a good followup on the chocolate breath weapon

  12. I could totally see the piñata version being used by well off knight families for birthday celebrations of their young kids as a substitute for a birthday cake. Instead of blowing out the candle the birthday boy/girl has to fight and defeat it when it both evades and attacks with a practice weapon.

  13. If I made one of these, I’d make it look like a huge burly knight golem with dark chocolate shields, weapons and armor. Sure everyone would laugh, and the golems would wow and entertain everyone with amazing bouts of skill and weapon mastery, but if any party crashes start something the laughs will inevitably stop. Bitter dark chocolate weapons coated in scorching hot, sickeningly sweet, milk chocolate to truly set any ruffian straight.

  14. So what if I use this but in the terms of on the inside of the golem is an actual npc character trapped and the party host uses these "golems" to feed it to guest or something like that

  15. I've used a chocolate golem before. My sister's character was ruling a kingdom and was getting married, and the great hall was decorated with all sorts of over the top party things for the reception. There were two chocolate statues of dragons with marshmallow eyes around the wedding cake. Her archnemesis, an evil cleric that used to have control over the region attacked her wedding and had her chocolate statues replaced with chocolate golems. When he made his strike on the wedding party, the chocolate dragons came to life and started spewing scalding hot marshmallow cream all over the place as a breath weapon LOL!
