‘Major error’: Albanese govt denies Ukraine’s plea to ‘save lives’ with retired helicopters

Strategic Analysis Australia Director Michael Shoebridge has criticised the “major error” by the Albanese government of not giving retired helicopters to the Ukrainians because the request said they would be used to “save lives” on the frontline.

Ukraine is pleading with the Australian government to donate its fleet of retired Taipan helicopters instead of dismantling and burying them.

It was revealed on Thursday morning that Defence Minister Richard Marles was yet to respond to a request from the Ukrainians which came more than a month ago.

Acting Defence Minister Pat Conroy formally rejected the request this afternoon.

“This is not just sad; this is a major error by the Albanese government. The Ukrainians desperately need military helicopters,” Mr Shoebridge told Sky News host Peta Credlin.

“Their formal request says they want to use these helicopters to evacuate wounded Ukrainian soldiers from the frontline and save lives, and sitting here in Canberra, Pat Conroy has said there are safety concerns, so we can’t give them to you.

“Well, the safety concerns the Ukrainians have are that they’re in a war, and they need to do everything they can to protect their soldiers – we should help them by giving things we’re getting rid of and can’t even sell.”

  1. Nothing the AU government can do to save Ukraine. It's over. A folly. A total misadventure & underestimation of strategic realities. A project totally reliant on soft power & hubris.

  2. I just seen how well 🇦🇺 Bushmasters are working out in Ukraine, reporting that 😳 Ukraine has no rights or business demanding anything from Australian taxpayers other than humanity aid and help with peace talks 👍… Amen Amen 🙏

  3. The Defence Ministry expects us to believe that 45 helicopters, worth $800,000 million, have been scrapped and buried in 12 weeks. Not physically possible, only retired on 29 September, 2023. They're in storage waiting to be sold off for salvage.

  4. Absolutely disgusting & disgraceful ! Ukrainians are flying ex soviet antiques & this BS government of ours is saying there could be safety issues 😂😂 with supplying modern helicopters . It was only 1 that had an issue & the blackbox had no safety warnings as far as the helicopters systems were concerned . Many countries are still using these helicopters without problems . There is something very dodgy here & we need truthful answers . Even if they didn't go to Ukraine they have a value on the open market ! Shame albasleezy ! SLAVA UKRAINI 👍 HEROYAM SLAVA ❤❤❤
